About Sutherland Guest House

A four-bedroom guest house with countryside charm and atmosphere. Perfect accommodation for up to 10 people. Sutherland is nestled in the Roggeveld Mountains. They say we are the coldest town in South Africa, but at Sutherland Guest House we will warm-heartedly welcome you.

This is a typical Karoo-style house built with stone and sporting a big verandah and thick walls. The house is suitable for two to 10 people and may be hired to a group of people who would like to do self-catering. We can also spoil you with a lovely farm-style breakfast. The rooms have their own bathrooms and the beds have electric blankets for those chilly winter nights. Each room has coffee and tea facilities. In the big lounge and dining room you can relax in front of a warm fire and forget about all your troubles.

Sutherland is known for the Southern Africa Large Telescope at the observatory, a mere 15 km from town. You can do a day or night tour at the observatory, but bookings are essential. The museum, the birthplace of the Afrikaans writers and poets, NP van Wyk Louw and his brother, EG Louw is also worth a visit. The Dutch Reform Church, with its beautiful organ and history of the Anglo Boer War is a must see. Our fauna and flora, the place of the riverine rabbit, rare butterflies, sutherlandia and many more flowers in spring will amaze you.

The Guest House appeared more pleasant on your site than in reality. Our rooms were dark and not serviced daily. The "self-catering" facilities are poor and we ended up going out to eat for all our meals. We had to request a new gas bottle which we then had to change ourselves. All the beds did have electric blankets though and there is a nice braai area outside.

Simple accommodation but well executed, friendly staff, clean, neat and tidy. Really good value.

We found the accommodation clean and very comfortable. The staff were pleasant and friendly and the breakfasts were delicious. There was ample and safe parking and the location is central, but quiet. A lovely place to getaway for a weekend

A literacy museum in the house where two famous Afrikaans poets and writer brothers, N.P van Wyk Louw and W.E.G. Louw were born in this house. Interesting displays.

We are very proud to present the Louw-Museum in Sutherland, home of both NP van Wyk Louw and WEG Louw. NP van Wyk Louw, born on 11 June 1906 in Sutherland, was an Afrikaans-language poet, playwright, and scholar. He is the older brother of...
