Bitterwasser Lodge and Flying Centre
About Bitterwasser Lodge and Flying Centre
Bitterwasser has garnered world-acclaim as a ‘Mecca for glider pilots’; no other spot on the planet is associated with so many world records and nowhere else do glider pilots fly more kilometres each year than from here. The magic of the Kalahari’s largest palm-tree alley is testimony to gliding accomplishments of former guests, dating back as far as the 1960s. A handful of enthusiasts built a world-class lodge to suit world record needs, Bitterwasser Lodge and Flying Centre.
22 freestanding bungalows envelope the guest in a warm and creative African ambiance. The unconventional architectural style of the lodge equals a sculpture, made from natural stone and grass-thatch. Each room has a terrace with an amazing view onto the surrounding farmland, Kalahari dunes and the famous Bitterwasser pan, plus your personal piece of the African night sky. Modern conveniences such as air-conditioning, en-suite baths and free Wi-Fi internet throughout the lodge come standard. Hidden from view is a pool with sunbathing area and comfortable deck chairs.
Bitterwasser Lodge also has 15 Rondavels to host guests wanting affordable accommodation, nestled in a cluster under large shade trees. These rondavels share communal bath facilities and are only steps away from our restaurant and bar. In addition a guide house and converted farmhouse are available with en-suite baths.
All accommodations are equipped with a water cooker for that first hot cup of coffee or tea before the sun hits. A wardrobe and guest amenities give an extra touch of home.
Should all the things to do at Bitterwasser leave some time, why not take a swim in a real farm-water-reservoir? No chlorine is used to clean the water; the reservoir is stocked with live fish and crystal clear. A game of garden-chess is available, and you can arrange with the staff for a match of table tennis or billiard.
Our meals feature meats and vegetables from the farm whenever possible, prepared lovingly by our Namibian staff and served inside the rustic lapa-style restaurant or outside on our terraces.
The lodge gardens are landscaped to tread carefully with our most prized possession, water. Soon to come we will harness what we have in abundance, sunlight, by installing a photo-voltaic grid feed system. Because we are here to stay we are committed to recycling. We have partnered with a specialist company in Windhoek to ensure pristine landscapes for generations of the future.
Safari: Bitterwasser offers a game drive with sun-downer whereby the guests can experience a drive around the lodge and if they are lucky, see some of our wild life consisting of mainly Kudus, Gemsbok, Springbok, Zebra and Giraffe.
