About Die Stal

Die Stal is a small family house built with stone, situated in Sutherland. This self-catering house is fully equipped with everything that you would need on a weekend away.

The house consists of two bedrooms, one bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen with an Aga stove for the winter months and a comfortable lounge area. Every room has blankets, electric warm blankets, electric oil heaters, spare blankets, towels and all bedding. This home is ideal for a family or a group of friends wanting to experience the tranquillity of Sutherland in a rustic, but comfortable accommodation.

120 km North of Matjiesfontein in the Roggeveld of the Karoo, Sutherland is a space of clear, dark night skies. It's where one can marvel at the star scapes that sweep the outer limits, and where astronomers come to use the telescopes of the South African Astronomical Observatory.

Our host was so friendly meeting us with fresh flowers and a basket of fruit. The cottage is perfect for a stay away from home. Warm and cosy fireplace and everything you need. We will definitely be back. Thank you

We had a lovely overnight stay at Die Stal. The accommodation is very clean, beautifully decorated and had everything we needed. We lit a fire in the open fireplace at night and it kept us warm in the freezing Sutherland weather, as did the electric blankets. Would definitely recommend it. A visit to the nearby Sterland stargazing experience is also well worth it.

Quaint and very comfortable and beautifully situated on the edge of the village. Enjoyed the cool down in the dam with the windmill.

We stayed for one night at Die Stal. The cottage was clean and ready for us with fresh flowers on the table. The big fireplace is great when it gets cold outside and we had a lovely evening. The kids loved the space available to kick a ball and the sheep that stayed close by.

A literacy museum in the house where two famous Afrikaans poets and writer brothers, N.P van Wyk Louw and W.E.G. Louw were born in this house. Interesting displays.
