About The Old Hatchery

Affordable B&B and self-catering accommodation, set in a tranquil country setting just 10 km from Underberg in the Southern Drakensberg. We provide free parking and fabulous meals off an a la carte menu in our restaurant. Located near horse riding trails, mountain biking trails, hiking routes, golf courses, trout fishing waters and of course the infamous Sani Pass.

We are situated 1 hour from Howick on the N3, 1 hour from Kokstad, making Underberg the ideal location from which to explore the majestic mountains of the Southern Drakensberg. We are on the route between Johannesburg and seaside resorts of the South Coast and Wild Coast making this the ideal location to stopover for the night.

We offer bed and breakfast, room only, self-catering and full board options in our various units.

Reasons to come to Underberg include guided Sani Pass 4x4 trips, birding, flower walks, Drak Challenge, canoeing, Drak 250, off-road racing, equestrian events, Splashy Fen, golf tours, San rock art, and really just autumn, winter, spring and summer. Notice how it's all about the outdoors. We don't have TVs in any of our bedrooms, we want you to hear the sound of the water flowing and the jackals talking to each other at night.

Bring your passport for your trip up Sani Pass into Lesotho.

The Old Hatchery is a tranquil place. The view is beautiful. The staff were friendly. The accommodation is lovely. My little fishing cabin had everything I needed. The restaurant food was good value for money & very tasty. I will go back there any time.

We had a very pleasant stay at The Old Hatchery (Oak Tree Lodge). The reception was hearty and we had everything we needed. The food was  tasty and the service good. The vicinity was very attractive, especially when the sun shone.
