About The Travelling Tortoise

The Travelling Tortoise is situated just outside of De Rust overlooking the Middleplaas Valley. The off-the-grid eco-resort comprises of 6 mountain chalets, set in the most beautiful environment. with exceptionsl views

The chalets feature fully equipped kitchens, family-sized lounges and large decks with braai facilities. The property also offers guests 2 swimming pools one solar heated. 3 chalets have private wood fired hot tubs. There is secure parking on the premises. There is a short hike on the retreat where you will see a large variety of birds including many hawks, eagles, tortoise, hares, buck and many smaller mammals. We are mosquito-free and guaranteed no power outages.

This area has all-year-round sunshine. The summers can be very warm - the winters refreshingly cool. De Rust has many great attractions in and around the area, such as the Meiringspoort pass and waterfall, the Kammanassie Nature Reserve, the Cango Caves, The Cango wildlife ranch and the Little Karoo Wine Route.

A new addition is the Adventure playground & The Silver Hare that speeds down the zip line.

I loved the tranquility, the beautiful surroundings and most amazing sun rise and sunsets, the sparkling pools and fantastic play area. My whole family loved the experience and can't wait to go back

On arrival at the reception car park - I got out to go up to reception, when Jeff arrived calling my name from his 4 wheeler bike. On seeing my bakkie, suggested we offload my baggage onto his bakkie to get up to the top of the hill, which is steep and very rocky, thinking my bakkie would not make it. At the Tortoise hut, he helped me unpack, took meat from me for freezing, and later brought me up wood for the evening braai. The hut was quaint, with small kitchen, lounge, dining, bedroom section and a bathroom, and all I needed. The next day after a tour into de Rust and Meirings Poort, I came...

We stayed at the Padloper which is at the top. Large enough for 2 people. Nicely equipped with absolutely stunning 360-degree views of the mountains and farms below!
