The former name of the dam, P.K Le Roux Dam was named after the former Minister of Water Affairs who for many years campaigned for the development of the Orange River. Recently the name Vanderkloof was decided on for both the dam and the town to avoid confusion. This Orange River Project was the largest engineering project ever attempted in South Africa. This combined storage and diversion dam also incorporates the Vanderkloof hydro-electricity power station which is connected to Escom’s national distribution network. The dam was officially opened on the 17 November 1977 by the former Minister, Mr. B.J Voster. The 8000 ha Rolfontein Nature Reserve almost surround the town and it houses more than 10 different species of antelope, 142 Avifauna and a rich variety of flora. The 13 866 ha surface area of the reservoir and the 3255 million cub meters of water houses 10 recorded species of fish. Please come and visit our town and experience the unique hospitality of the area.
