About Malala Lodge

Malala is a bush lodge on a 140 hectare private nature reserve, accommodating a maximum of 18 guests, thereby ensuring a tranquil African bush atmosphere and experience.

Our lodge is located in the Hluhluwe area, in the centre of the Elephant Coast in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. We are ideally positioned between the world-renowned Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve, Mkhuze Game Reserve, Sodwana Bay and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

Malala has been owned and managed by the Harvey family since 2001 and we, together with an enthusiastic team of staff, are always on hand to provide the personal attention one would associate with a small intimate lodge.

Our property has a variety of vegetation types, including lowland forest, woodland, grasslands and wetlands. You can enjoy a leisurely stroll through these diverse habitats on well-maintained and marked walking trails. You may come across some of our game, which includes Zebra, Blue Wildebeest, Impala, Nyala, Reedbuck and Red and Grey Duiker. Other smaller wildlife that may cross your path are Large-spotted Genet, various mongooses, Vervet Monkeys and dung beetles. You may even spot the rare Suni Antelope or the unusual Four-toed Elephant Shrew.

In addition, Malala Lodge is at the centre of the birding hotspot of KwaZulu-Natal with over 500 species of bird having been recorded in the Elephant Coast area. The Malala Lodge birdlist currently has over 270 recorded species.

The main thatched lodge is centrally positioned within the camp and overlooks indigenous forest. Here guests can enjoy a relaxing drink in the cosy bush pub or take a dip in the palm-fringed swimming pool.

Thank you for your email. To be honest, we did not enjoy our stay at Malala Lodge. The facilities were outdated, the bed and pillows were not comfortable, the oven was dirty and filled the place with smoke when we used it and the toaster kept tripping the switches when we tried to use it and the crockery and cutlery were dirty. We actually left a day earlier because of the above reasons. Someone should be checking the facilities to ensure that everything is in working order for the next guest(s).

Dear Paul, Lesley and Pete, We enjoyed our stay in the Malala lodge very much. We have had a wonderful time and loved the breakfast and diners. We have also great news, we have found the leather jacket in our car. It was somehow partially hidden in the trunk/wheel compartment.Best wishes from the three of us!

We spend five days in a wonderful cottage (Tamboti) in this oasis in the woods. A perfect stepstone to explore the surroudings from Hluhluwe-Umfolozi to the Indian Ocean. And all day you can look forward to the dinners that Pete and Jane are serving. Thanks for everything.Atie en Wim van den Brink, Berkenwoude, The Netherlands

Malala lodge is a great place to discover the bush! We enjoyed the warm welcome of Jane, the wonderful diners prepared by Paul and the great drive we had with Peter. The forest trail is a good way to discover antilopes, zebras, nyalas, monkeys and many birds living in this wonderful "garden".Really an enjoyable place for taking a rest.Thank you for such a delightful stay :-)
