About Wami River Bush Retreat (Kisampa)
Wami River Bush Retreat also know as Kisampa, lies north of Bagamoyo and the Wami River and immediately southwest of Saadani National Park. Set in a 140,000 acre private conservation sanctuary. Kisampa sits atop a range of hills overlooking the Wami River Valley and surrounded by lushly vegetated rolling hills and valleys. Wildlife is shy but increasing with the protection now provided in the sanctuary.
Within camp our goal is to be as environmentally friendly as possible by conserving precious water resources, and when ever possible support local communities by buying local products, which reduces our carbon footprint. Furthermore, we also employ staff from the surrounding local communities, allowing our guests to have cultural exchange of ideas and lifestyles.
Accommodation consists of a thatched roof over an open-sided area, within which a large and comfortable hand-crafted bed rests under a protective mosquito net. Bathroom and toilet are ecologically designed, without electricity or running water, but extremely pleasing none-the-less. The comfortable composting toilet, due to the remoteness of the lodge, is open to the hillside, and can truly be described as a loo-with-a-view! Shower water is heated and brought to your bathroom by friendly staff, and again showering while out in the open surrounded by trees, the bush and the inevitable collection of birds and monkeys is a lovely experience. The rooms and paths are lit up using solar lamps, so bring torches to walk to and from your room.
Meals are prepared with available fresh local ingredients. The set menu changes daily and with advance notice we cater for dietary requirements as best as we can. Each morning is a breakfast feast, served with Tanzanian coffee or tea in the Pavilion. The lunch can be served at the camp or a picnic lunch is provided while on an activity and a three course dinner is served under the stars, warmed by the nearby crackling fire (weather permitting) or in the Pavilion.
There’s a bar, lounge and a plunge pool for relaxing, from which you can see an endless view of the Kisampa plains. A great place to relax after a long drive.
There’s a great range of activities to do here. For birding enthusiast, Kisampa is a birders paradise and there are a few secluded birding areas where you can spend the day relaxing and watching some of east Africa’s finest bird life. Bush walks, as well as biking around the conservancy. Kisampa Private Conservation Area renowned for their diversity of habitat, including grassland, rivers, coastal forest, oxbow lakes, river sand banks and coastal savannah. Canoeing on the Wami River – Canadian style open fiber glass boats accommodating 2 to 3 guests at a time, punt down the river and enjoy the bird life and river scenery, looking out for hippo and crocodiles as they are about. Fishing from the banks of the Wami River or in the oxbow lake, with a cooler box at your side or do a guided village tour to Matipwili on the edge of Saadani National Park. Night drives are also possible, not for big animals, but to get a chance to spot the nocturnal shy creatures not normally seen during the day. Day trips to Saadani National Park can also be arranged.
Kisampa is the ultimate bush retreat – a place where you can turn off from all the stress, pressure and noise. We keep your experience intimate and personal!
