About Ibo Island Lodge
Ibo Island Lodge is the perfect place to explore the Quirimbas Archipelago National Park in Northern Mozambique. Ibo Island’s magic is overwhelming. Steeped in history, rich in culture and nominated as a potential World Heritage Site, the island dates back to the early 1600’s, making it one of the most ancient settlements in Mozambique. Since its role as one of the country’s central trading centres, Ibo has remained all but forgotten to the outside world for almost a century. Today you can wander around the mysterious town amongst forts and ancient romantic buildings with many fascinating stories just waiting to be retold.
Ibo Island boasts much more than historical significance. This island is one of the most pristine destinations in Africa. The warm turquoise waters surrounding Ibo are inhabited by turtles and tropical fish; viewings of dolphins and whales are frequent whilst the bird life is abundant and varied. Here you will encounter idyllic beaches and explore rich coral reefs. Guests can also take to the water to discover the Quirimbas National Park in sailing and motorized dhows or quietly paddle through the mangroves in kayaks.
The lodge has spectacular views over the waterfront and accommodates guests in beautifully decorated rooms. Three historic colonial mansions each over 150 years old with high lofty ceilings have been stylishly renovated to accommodate 14 en-suite bedrooms with hand crafted 4 poster beds and locally crafted furniture, various verandas, tropical gardens and a spectacular roof top restaurant that provides the ideal venue to watch the sun go down.
On Ibo Island become immersed in the unchanged, ancient culture of Ibo and the chance to interact with wonderfully gentle islanders, or simply relax at one of the pools, refresh the senses with a massage and soak up the exotic atmosphere.
Safari: There is nothing quite like what we offer anywhere in Africa on these trips – it’s truly a memorable experience in one of the most beautiful regions left in Africa with uninhabited beaches, and islands and miles of crystal clear blue warm ocean.
Beach: The sandbank beach the lodge uses is secluded and appears in the middle of the Indian Ocean, surrounded by clear blue water, accessed only by boat. Head out to our little piece of paradise for either breakfast or lunch served under our Bedouin tent.
Spa: Ibo’s treatments have been culturally inspired and can include traditional body scrubs prepared using Ibo coarse sea salt and zesty lemon grass grown locally as part of the lodges’ garden project.
Wedding Venues: With a choice of 14 all individually designed sea facing, garden or historical rooms. All wedding ceremony includes: ceremony set-up, local flowers – décor and bouquets, simple wedding cake, private reception meal, blessing from our lodge manager.
Family friendly: We have a very varied range of activities at Ibo Island Lodge suitable for all ages. Generally guests partake in a multitude of experiences in combination with relaxation treatments or taking in the islands tranquillity, history and ambience.
Romantic: We love hosting honeymooners on Ibo, the island is very unique and at Ibo Island Lodge we specialise in romantic spoils and surprises! Ibo is a very popular choice of island for honeymooners and we will do everything we can to make it truly special.
