About Freedom O Clock Backpacking Retreat

This small, rustic, eco-minded family-run spot lies on the eastern side of the Mdumbi River mouth in a very rural and remote village called Mngcibe. Wake up to mind-blowing views of the ocean, beach, rare mangroves and forest-lined river.Kitchen is communal (makes for social evenings). Our self catered kitchen, with fridge/freezer, gas stove, and the usual kitchen goodies offers limited space for breakfasts and lunches only. We serve delicious home cooked breakfasts, lunches and house dinners daily.Note that we are completely off the grid, have no municipal water and only rely on harvesting rain water. The area has no electricity and we make use of solar power for lights, gas for fridge, freezer and stove, paraffin for shower. We stock a limited variety of beverages and alcoholic drinks. Be sure to bring along all your favourite treats, drinks, smokes, etc... Spazas only stock a limited amount of the very basics.Horse rides, hiking, snorkeling, fishing, surf lessons, kayaking, scenic boat cruises, cultural dancing, a traditional evening spent with a local Xhosa household (includes traditional meal) or peaceful sundowners at the river edge can all be arranged. For those who have not yet travelled to the Wild Coast it should be pointed out that you will be travelling in an under-developed region. The variety and quality of goods and services you may be accustomed to are not always readily available.Freedom O Clock Backpacking Retreat is set in a remote and primitive region, where even the provision of fresh water can not be taken for granted. Taking this into account we aim to achieve the highest possible standards and we feel it is best to make you aware of this.If you prefer luxury to comfortable living then Freedom O Clock may not be for you.

Beach: Incredible ocean, beach and river views from all our rooms. Our beach was also rated SA's best beach by Getaway magazine.

Family friendly: As we are family run, we love having other families share in our paradise and beautiful outdoor lifestyle. The area is extremely safe and you can feel secure in knowing that your children can play "outside the gates.

Romantic: If your idea of romantic is Mother Nature...picnic on a secluded beach or a sunrise pancake breakfast on a rolling green hill overlooking the ocean, then look no further.

The owners are incredibly friendly people, always up for a chat and never to busy to help. Just be aware that the place is very rustic and the roads going in and out are in a very poor state.

Incredible place! A little piece of paradise on the edge of the world. Lu and Otto are fantastic hosts with a truelly magical thing going on at this backpackers. The road there was a tad tricky but only adds to the adventure and for the views and tranquillity totally worth it. Accommodation was nice and clean and profered meals home cooked and tasty. Would recommend sticking around more that on one night for the full experience and to properly unwind.

Hi, I have never been so disappointed in my 40 odd years of going to the Transkei, I was devastated on arrival with my guests from Cape Town, besides been so ashamed of putting my family and guests through what I call absolute Hogwash, they should be taken off the map completely, in fact I should demand at least half my money back, I am not interested in going into all the detail but really, how SafariNow can accommodate this place is beyond words, that is all I have to say. We came back 2 days before we were to leave. I will never go back there, ever.RegardsHerman KorteESTABLISHMENT RESPONSE:...
