About Elundini Backpackers
Only 20 minutes from Hogsback, high in the Amatola Mountains, lies the picturesque rural Xhosa Village of Elundini. If you’re after an African experience, this is a must for anyone travelling through the Hogsback area. Situated deep in the homelands of the Xhosa people, this eco-friendly place is peaceful and community orientated. The local scenery is stunning and the hospitality amazing. Sleep in traditional rondavels, enjoy a free mielie pap breakfast and try some of the activities that are 100% owned and run by the people of Elundini. Local is lekker!
Elundini Backpackers is not like most backpackers. We are almost completely of the grid and depend mostly on renewable energy. Electricity is generated from our solar panels. Solar geysers and our 'donkey' are warming up our water. Rain water is harvested from the roof and stored in tanks. We also use rain water for drinking. We do not have flushing toilets but use compost toilets instead. All water is recycled.
Community development is high on our priority list. A successful bee project has been established and locally produced honey is sold at the backpackers. For years we support the local pre-school and a wood work project will start soon. It's all about creating jobs, jobs and jobs.
Accommodation is offered in outside rondavels, which are warm in winter and cool and summer. There are also camping facilities. There are no electrical plugs in the rooms, but you can charge phones and laptop in the main lounge. All of the rooms share a clean ablution block next to the main building, which is a common area with a bar, lounge and a self-catering kitchen. Guests are welcome to make use of the self-catering kitchen or they can join us for meals. A basic breakfast and lunch is available and a set menu is available for dinner every night.
Please note that there is no electricity in the rondavels.
