About Don Don River Mill Lodge

Don Don River Mill Lodge is approximately 16 km form Hobhouse, built from Sandstone, and situated on the banks of the Caledon River overlooking the Lesotho mountains.

The mill was built in 1865 and houses the original milling equipment which is still in working condition. The two self-catering stone huts overlook a dense Poplar grove and the Lesotho mountains, with the Caledon River flowing only meters away.

Wake up to the sound of the flowing river and canal, the leaves in the Poplar grove rustling in the wind and the sound of the birds - nature at its best.

We got there late on Friday evening and left again on Monday afternoon, and for the whole time there we saw no-one else...PERFECT! We built puzzles, read books, walked along the river, ate too much...again, PERFECT!The Old Shop is well-appointed, with great beds and a lovely fire place - we visited in mid-winter (the coldest for many years...) and thus we kept the fire burning from early morning till late at night. The lack of cell signal (from just outside Hobhouse) meant three days of no beeps for texts or e-mails, which we also appreciated - there's a difference between simply switching...

Sidney was so incredibly accommodating when our departure from Joburg was delayed several hours by car trouble. He came back late to meet us and settlemus in to the Miller’s hut, where we were welcomed by a fire, KitKats on the towels on the bed, and piles of blankets and duvets (obviously needed in the cooler months). The hut was perfect for two, with a microwave, electric frying pan, kettle (tea and I stand coffee provided). The kitchenette is short on implements, but I’m sure they’re available on request. There are some lovely walks down to the Caledon River over a little swinging bridge....

Hob House was quiet, remote, well equipped, right on the water, an easy walk to Lesotho over the suspension bridge and just reeks of history. We were treated to a tour of the old mill by Sidney who inspired us with his positive attitude and stories of his family involvement at the mill (too much to remember all of it) The road out to Ladybrand through cultivated farmlands was a fitting end to a lovely nights rest.

Groenkloof 4x4 is in a valley at the foot of Viervoetberg, in the Eastern Free State. The farm offers tracks for quad bikes, mountain bikes and 4x4s. The tracks cross each other but are clearly marked so that nobody gets lost. The 4x4 trail is...

A visit to The Mud Studio just outside Ladybrand is a well worth detour to make. Werner and Philippa du Toit are two very talented artists. They have won much international acclaim. The factory shop offers some beautiful pieces to take back home.

No visit to Lesotho would be complete without a pony trek. It is the transport of choice for most Basotho as the sturdy ponies handle the narrow trails better than any 4X4 can. Pony treks can be arranged in the morning or the afternoon. Beginner...
