About Die Gat Guesthouse

Situated in the valley of Middelplaas near De Rust, Die Gat Guest House is a farmstead and historic monument owned by the Schoeman family since the early 1800s. Characteristics of the old homestead, such as the paint of German origin on the interior walls of the voorkamer (lounge), the original architectural form of the house and the picturesque environment have ensured that many a South African film has been shot here.

The guest rooms in the outbuildings, previously the school where the Schoeman children were educated, the cart-shed turned winepress, or even an ox wagon used by earlier generations, have been suitably furnished to give you a unique experience of the outdoors.

A visit to the farm and the daily routine, where you get to know the ostrich with its fatal kick, and a visit to the labourers and their families ensure that you get to know the people and life on a typical Klein Karoo farm. The tranquility and peacefulness of Die Gat ensures an unforgettable sleep. You can even sleep with doors wide open so as not to miss the grumbling of ostriches. You can also relax at the special pool of Die Gat, with its beautiful view of the majestic surroundings.

Lovely relaxing farm setting with our hosts Anton and Susan Schoeman who provided us with a spectacular home cooked dinner and breakfast

Because it was not full, we were upgraded to the honeymoon suite. We were absolutely fascinated by the beautiful way in which the bedoom, bathroom and jacuzzi rooms have been done. Wherever we looked there was something of interest. The pictures, the decor in general reflected the history of this farm.Sitting on the peaceful stoep which overlooks a field with sheep and horses was an added bonus.  Dinner was an experience. Susan, who told us that she has never been trained professionally produced a three course meal that was OUTSTANDING. Beautifully presented, very tasty. Anton was extremely...

Our night at Die Gat was one of the highlights of our recent holiday. We were thoroughly impressed with the careful attention to details and enjoyed a wonderful dinner and beautifully prepared and presented breakfast. To cap it all the environment is scenic and restful.
