About Magoebaskloof Birders' Cottages

Magoebaskloof Birders’ Cottages are located on Dragonwyck Farm in the Magoebaskloof on the edge of the Limpopo Drakensberg escarpment. Accommodation comprises two self-catering cottages surrounded by indigenous plants providing the ideal habitat for many birds and animals. The cottages are accessed by a 2 km dirt road. The road is not suitable for low profile cars or drivers who are unaccustomed to dirt roads. Trogon Cottage features one bedroom furnished with a double bed. The bathroom has a large double bath with a view of the forest. There is a separate shower. Another large double bath is hidden outside in the garden. Hot water is supplied by a wood-burning stove. Robin Cottage is a two bedroom unit but can be booked by a couple alone. The main bedroom has a bath, shower and toilet tucked into a very private garden outside. The second bedroom has a double bed on the mezzanine level and two single beds on the lower floor. Hot water is supplied by a wood-burning stove. Linen and towels are provided in both cottages and each unit has a fully equipped kitchen with a gas stove, fridge-freezer, microwave, and barbecue facilities. The cottages are no-smoking zones and smokers are kindly requested to smoke outside. Unfortunately no pets are allowed. Dragonwyck Farm is a working farm producing avocados and indigenous plants. Various walks can be enjoyed on the farm which follow the streams and provide access to escarpment forest. Woodbush Forest, one of the premier birding spots in South Africa, is also a short drive away and there are a number of scenic drives in the district for excellent bird watching opportunities. Fishing and adventure activities are available in the Haenertsburg area.

After a frightening drive, we arrived to the cutest cottage in the forests and loved the charm of the Robin Cottage. We spent a night and wished that we had booked for longer. What a delight the outdoor bath was. A restful and peaceful haven.

Trogon Cottage was an absolute delight and pleasure for Merry and me. It is extremely well equipped, right down to aprons in the kitchen. The personal touches were also superb – bubble bath at the outside bath, strip of candles in the main bathroom etc.  The plunge pool was perfect for a hot day braaing outside. The peace and solitude of the cottage setting were just what we needed. Will we return ? – next booking underway! Thanks Mark and Bridget.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Magoebaskloof Birder's Robin Cottage. The cottage itself is very spacious, well furnished and set in the most idyllic, panoramic environment. The highlight for all of us was the outside bath which gave one the impression of actually being in an indigenous forest whilst bathing. We would highly recommend this accommodation to anyone looking for a stress-free environment and a little bit of soul cleansing.

We were pleasantly surprised by the beauty and simplicity of the cottage, the unexpected romance of a nearby waterfall, outside bath and remoteness. Will definitely be returning soon!

We planned a short, much needed getaway. Just for 2. It was fabulous! We had a wonderful stay. Surroundings so tranquil. Nothing comes close to this atmosphere. And so well equipped! Thank you very much!! Willem & Lisa
