Lying west of the industrial Duncan Dock, the V&A Waterfront is Cape Town's original Victorian harbour. Before its construction the Cape of Storms was notorious for wrecking ships during ferocious winter spells. In 1860 a very young Prince Alfred ceremoniously dumped the first load of stone to begin work on the Breakwater and 1869 the twin basin dock was completed.

Renovated period buildings, imitation Victorian malls, piers and a busy harbour coexist with an astonishing collection of pubs, clubs, eateries, museums and outdoor theatres set against the panoramic view of Table Mountain.

The star of the show is the two-level Victoria Wharf, crammed with an array of shops, cinemas, kiosks and stalls. It houses a diverse variety of restaurants, ranging from sushi bars, coffee shops, take-out joints and upmarket venues, the most popular being the outdoor ones where you can enjoy the vistas created by harbour lights and the surreal lit Table Mountain.

The Visitor Centre on Dock Road is the starting point for an outstanding self-guided historical tour interspersed with 32 information boards. You can purchase a map here and gather information or book tours and taxis – 021 408 7600. Just around the corner from the Visitor Centre is a hit with kids, the Two Oceans Aquarium.

The centrally situated Old Port Captain's Office lies next to the modern swing bridge, connecting it to the whimsical Clock Tower and further along the Nelson Mandela Gateway. Here you can book the only tours on Robben Island, and it's the departure point for the ferry. The Gateway has a restaurant and museum with high-tech interactive displays conveying the island's history, voices of prisoners and freedom songs.

So much beauty & fun
Wow, what an amazing area offering so much great stuff. We had just got married and went on boat cruises, dined at top restaurants, enjoyed amazing views... everything was excellent! Now and again we shall visit.

The V and A Waterfront experience, next to none
The scenery is amazing, relaxing and refreshing. The experience cannot be fully described by words, you need to experience a walk on the V and A Waterfront to be able understand and relate to the narrations of those who are able to do so. Therefore, if you can afford, please visit the V and A Waterfront for amazing acts, boat rides, actual- and/or window shopping, tasty meals...the list goes on. The is an interest for every one, from pensioners to the middle aged to the newly wedded to students, teenagers and children. Its a one in a million experience, try it.

Great place to Shop
The Waterfront is the first thing to do on a tourist's list. Sporting a large shopping mall, and many more little shops; you will be spoilt for choice. Stroll around, eat out at the fabulous restaurants. Balthazars and Den Anker are my top favourites. Go on a sun down boat trip, or even as far as Robben Island for a tour. There is something for everyone.

Waterfront Rocks as a holiday destination.
Our all time favourite vacation locale. We try and stay at the Waterfront Apartments because primarily of the security and easy acessibility. Also is a very reliable site to make bookings from. The best shoppping and resturants are close by. For convenience there is the cinema and the food court ( under renovation now). Also this is a great hub to see the rest of Western Cape from, the vinyards, Cape point, Stellenbosch, Hermanus etc.

So much to see
It's easy to spend a day in the Waterfront just people watching, listening to live music, shopping, eating in one of the many restaurants, or just stopping for a coffee. But there is so much more to see & do - the Aquarium, a visit to Robben Island, take a boat trip, or a ride on Cape Town's answer to the London Eye - except you go round four times instead of one!! We love it!
