“The wilderness is something special. To me, the only way to experience the real spirit of Africa is on foot. Away from the noise and turmoil of modern society, it truly helps you to get your terrestrial problems into perspective.” – Norman Carr, Kakuli Kruger’s Private Bush Camps are located in the exclusive Timbavati and Klaserie private game reserves, which are part of the Big Five Greater Kruger National Park. Situated on riverbeds, surrounded by Leadwood, Mopane and Acacia trees or shaded by huge Jackalberry trees, these authentic, unfenced 8-bedded tented camps have a real African charm typically enhancing that true wilderness feeling. With a focus on experience rather than luxury the maximum of 8 guests sleep “safari style” under canvas in twin-bedded Meru-style tents, linen and towels provided. Hot showers and flush toilets are separate but closely situated between the tents, so easily accessible to all the guests. Bush walks and game drives accompanied by an experienced and knowledgeable guide, are offered early in the morning, late in the afternoon and at night. The camps have no electricity, but there is solar lighting in the tents, bathrooms, kitchen and dining areas and there are candles, paraffin lanterns and a camp fire to guide you around at night. Due to the remoteness of the camps and exclusivity of the areas, and to enhance quality game sightings, the min stay that is required is 3 nights. Packages are available from Fri-Mon (3 nights) or Mon-Fri (4 nights). A shuttle service between Johannesburg and the meeting point is available every Monday and Friday – the list of collection/drop-off points will be made available on confirmation. Self-drives: The meeting point is at a local Bush Pub on the Timbavati Road, from where you will be taken in a 4x4 Landrover into the Greater Kruger NP. Arrive at Motswari, 'to keep and conserve', Private Game Reserve and leave as a friend. This sentiment is the hallmark of our traditional safari camp that conjures up elements of African nostalgia, romance and charm and combines these with warm, personal touches to provide you with a sophisticated, yet unobtrusive commune with nature. Set deep in the Timbavati, in the heart of the Kruger National Park, you are assured of rich game viewing and sightings of the Big 5 in their natural environment, as our boundary with Kruger is open. In operation for 30 years, we have chosen to disregard the trend for glamour and flamboyance, which means bush as far as the eye can see and unobtrusive luxuries that don't intrude on your experience. Here your encounter with the bush is a still walk in nature. The bush is a humbling experience where one should have the chance to unwind from modern stresses and rejuvenate the soul. Motswari is family owned and prides itself on its conservation values, exquisite cuisine, award-winning wines, luxurious accommodation and hospitality in the tradition of one of the original lodges in South Africa. Each of our 15 thatched, en-suite bungalows is decorated in understated natural materials. The bungalows have air-conditioning, mosquito nets and spectacular bush and river views. Our professional rangers and skilled Shangaan trackers guide your early morning and late afternoon drives and excursions into the bush. With close on 150 square-kilometres of wide horizons and untamed wilderness, Motswari is an unforgettable experience.

Motswari – Geiger’s Camp

Motswari Game Reserve lies in the heart of the untamed South African landscape - a place untouched that is still teeming with wildlife, where predator and prey remain locked in a constant battle for survival. Here, there is an incomparable beauty; an Africa you have to experience. Deep in the Timbavati Nature Reserve, this vintage game lodge exemplifies the simple balance of nature, as understated luxury and conservation come together as one. This inspiring family-owned game reserve has been in the care of the Geiger family for more than 40 years. Motswari means "to conserve and protect" in Tswana, a native language indigenous to the area. The 150 square kilometres game reserve has long been a wildlife sanctuary, a haven for large varieties of plant and animal species. Sadly, few places remain on the African continent that still offers such diversity. Here, you’ll witness the unyielding nature of the bushveld, as you get to see the secret habits of animals as they live, day after day, in the Timbavati Nature Reserve.

    Timbavati Reserve South Africa

    Timbavati Reserve Safari Accommodation

Home to the famous ‘White Lions’, Timbavati Reserve has long basked in the spotlight. Although no white lions have been seen at Timbavati for years, several white lions are regularly seen in other parts of Kruger National Park and they could easily reappear in the Timbavati prides.

Forming part of the greater Kruger National Park, the reserve features 12 luxury tourist lodges and is a convenient five-hour drive from Johannesburg. Kruger National Park lies on the east, Klaserie Nature Reserve and Umbabat Private Nature Reserve are to the north and Thornybush Game Reserve is just west.

With no hindrance of fenced borders, wildlife are able to roam freely between Timbavati and the massive Kruger National Park. Thrilling sightings of lion, elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, giraffe and even shy leopard and cheetah are regular occurrences. This is definitely one of Africa’s best!

"Timbavati Private Nature Reserve is one of the most special places I have ever visited. The game and accommodation diversity sets it apart for most other reserves that I have been fortunate enough to visit. With a variety of lodges and self-catering camps, each offering something a little different, there really is something for everyone. Most of the lodges work together during game drives which means that you are able to see fantastic sightings and get close to the wide variety of game who call the Timbavati their home. Although you are able to get up close, the rangers and trackers are ever conscious of the animal's best interests and never get too close that the game are unsettled. If you are looking for an authentic African safari experience, I'd highly recommend visiting the reserve."
