Stellenbosch: an interesting place
I found Stellenbosch to be full of restaurants and extremely busy roads. We went to Tokara for dinner and honestly the service was the best that we have had in the Western Cape for a very long time. The food was good and the atmosphere charming. Our highlight had to be Overture where we had lunch. The staff's knowledge on food and how it had been made was a pleasant surprise. The food was by far one of the best meals that we have ever had and the wine was selected specifically for a meal and made the experience a very special one.
An attractive university town in spectacular surroundings. Fine walking in town (Jan Marais) Park and beyond town (Jonkershoek Nature Reserve), cycling (To Jonkershoek, and over Helshoogte (sic) to the Fransch Hoek Valley. A fine museum, and music Conservatiorium. Some* interesting (and much boring) architecture. All this marginalises the majority of its people. Stellenbosch and the winelands were built on slavery. This history is displaced. Declaration of interest: I studied there (1961-1964). Fortunately, the University is no longer as it was then.
