A Little Farmhouse is situated in a leafy, wind-free glade which takes you back in time. The cottage is tranquil and comfortable with only the birds and sheep in the distance, while having easy access to shops and restaurants. The old Dover stove makes for fun cooking and the forest bath and shower is a romantic way of stargazing with a glass of bubbly. This is comfortable farm living with only the tame animals for company. You can spend your days lazing on the large patio with a book or choose to partake in a number of activities in and around Stanford. Horse riding, paddling on the river, birdwatching, hiking, eating at the country restaurants are a few examples. The unique little village of Stanford, overlooked by the moody slopes of the Klein River Mountains, lies just inland of False Bay, forming the tip of a triangle with the coastal towns of Hermanus and De Kelders. Peaceful and largely unaffected by change, Stanford is an eclectic mix of shops, galleries, restaurants and coffee shops, and the list of activities for a largely rural village exceeds one’s expectations. When in Stanford, go to the Birkenhead Brewery, a boutique brewery open for beer tasting and lunches and the Stanford Walking Trail, which wends its way along the banks of the Klein River through the town and offers visitors some wonderful glimpses of the many birds in the area, including the endangered Blue Crane.

Schoone Oordt Country House

Sleeps 26 in 10 rooms

Schoone Oordt Country House is a charming country hotel in Swellendam South Africa, possibly the...
Schoone Oordt Country House is a charming country hotel in Swellendam South Africa, possibly the best of Swellendam accommodation, with 10 luxury bedrooms set in lush gardens, an intimate Conservatory restaurant, a sparkling saltwater pool and a passion for people, family, food, wine and the environment. The emphasis here is on unpretentious, unaffected luxury, elegance, quality and acute attention to detail. There is something quite magical about this striking Victorian Manor House. She has been lovingly restored over many years by Richard and Alison Walker and is passionately run by Sonette and Wander (pronounced V-un-derr) Bester. As a result, she has been instilled with charm and grace and she adores welcoming guests. Her extensive grounds house two standard and six luxury rooms, a quaint, private family cottage and a romantic and secluded honeymoon suite set in abundant gardens and sheltered by aged oak trees. Each luxury accommodation has conceded to every modern convenience whilst unique, restored (mostly by Richard) antiques, retain the Victorian feel of the Manor House and a bygone era. The Manor House itself boasts the most exquisite light and airy conservatory, which Richard built in true English style, a cosy fire-lit bar and lounge, an intimate dining room and a typical country kitchen. The warmth of the original wooden floors, ceilings and doors coupled with many quirky antique pieces creates a wonderful welcoming ambience and guests are encouraged to ‘kuier’* here. Meals are made with love and served with true Schoone Oordt flair and style. The freshest best quality produce from small local suppliers is sourced as organically and ethically as possible, as well as fresh herbs and occasional veggies from the garden. Breakfasts are traditionally a gourmet affair and our little country hotel has developed quite a reputation for them. Complimentary afternoon tea with home-baked savoury and sweet goodies is served overlooking the garden on sunny summer afternoons. In winter, complimentary snack platters and a warming welcome drink are offered on arrival. Intimate, delicious dinners are served in The Conservatory Restaurant where guests can enjoy a carefully prepared, sophisticated South African menu with wines sourced (by Sonette) from the celebrated verdant regions surrounding Swellendam; Robertson and Hermanus. Talented Chef Wander is well on his way to building The Conservatory Restaurant into one of the finest of Swellendam Restaurants. Schoone Oordt Country House has been created with a vision for Swellendam weddings and special occasions. Choose from the intimate and private boardroom with views of the mountains, the sun-drenched conservatory overlooking the grounds or the cosy, slightly more formal dining room in the grand old house. She is truly an extraordinary venue for an exclusive occasion filled with laughter and love. The Swellendam area offers guests an abundance of activities. Hiking, horse-trails, bike-trails, watersports as well as visits to the nearby Nature Reserves are a must. A trip to the De Hoop Nature Reserve for seasonal whale watching cannot be missed, a short journey over the Tradouw’s Pass to quadbike in Barrydale as well as a day trip wine-tasting in the Robertson Wine Valley. Along with a nine-hole golf course, quaint coffee shops, the renowned Drostdy museum, berry & lavender-picking, good restaurants and a feast of art, Swellendam spoils its visitors for choice. Schoone Oordt Country House is a gracious old dame with heart and soul and she invites you to visit, soon.

Enveloped by the Langeberg majestic mountains and the Breede River, sits Deo Volente Guest Farm. The tranquil essence of the farm is best captured by the early morning call of fish-eagle, the tortoises, the long-ear hare and the wild buck. Also early morning, you might hear our rooster, Haandrik announce the daybreak or the free roaming cattle pass your cottage on their way to graze. Our wooden cottages consist of a lounge, a fully equipped kitchenette consisting of a gas two-plate stove and basin. The kitchen extends onto a furnished veranda. Each cottage has a private braai facility. The bedroom consists of a double bed and the bathroom has a bath with a gas geyser and a green loo. The cottages are serviced daily and we have a pet friendly option with a small enclosed area. The campsite is next to the river and offers a 3 m by 4 m covered deck with a braai facility, gas braai and basic kitchen utensils, a kettle a pot and a pan with a large counter with wash-up basin. The water we supply to the washing and bathing areas come from another source. During your stay with us you are welcome to swim in the river, hike, have a picnic or meditate at the various spots on this approximately 100 hectare area. At the end of the day relax on your cottages veranda next to a crackling fire and become one with the sunset as you watch it slowly slips behind the velvety mountains.

In Suurbraak, on the other side of the river, is the quaint self-catering cottage, “Bibi’s Joy”, belonging to Peter and Bibi Present. Its appeal lies in its solitude and the fact that the mountain is its back-yard. This set-up is ideal for the avid outdoors-person, as mountain-biking, hiking, cross-country running, cycling, and even swimming and canoeing depending of the water level of the river, can be practiced with ease. Bibi's Joy is as promising as its name suggests. Accommodation comprises two en-suite bedrooms with double beds and bedding. There are eight sleeping stretchers available for the kids. Hoopoe’s, the Cape robin, a variety of sugar birds, fiscal shrike, forktailed drongo’s are found here. Goats, horses and cattle on the adjacent plots add character and complement the country feel. One of the reasons the main gate must be kept closed at all times. Nestled at the foothills of the lush and beautiful Langeberg Mountains, lies the picturesque little town of Suurbraak. Overberg South Africa

Overberg Accommodation

In the early days of the European occupation of the Cape, very few people ventured far from the foot of Table Mountain. The vast Cape Flats to the east of the fledgling city were a treacherous stretch of shifting sands, wetlands and - of course - wild animals. And at the eastern extreme of that huge, sandy plain was a formidable mountain range, which is now - a couple of hundred years later - easily traversed by virtue of the scenic Sir Lowry's and Houwhoek Passes on the N2. But in those days, these mountains presented a serious barrier to movement and the land beyond them, which was visited only by the very adventurous and became known as the 'Overberg' - the land over the mountains.

The Overberg extends from the high-lying apple orchards of the area between the two passes in the west, to just past the lovely historical town of Swellendam in the east and - to the south - as far as you can go. Cape Agulhas is the most southerly point of the African continent and - officially - the place where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. The interior is dominated by grain farms interspersed with cute country towns, and the coast is a series of beautiful bays, beaches, wetland and dramatic headlands. Walker Bay, which lies between the towns of Hermanus and Gansbaai, has two claims to fame.
It is reputed to be the best land-based whale watching in the world, as the huge southern right whales swim close in shore and there is a beautiful and convenient, fragrant, flower-rich cliff-top walk that offers an excellent vantage point to observe these, South Africa's biggest tourists.

They turn up here in late winter to escape the harsh Antarctic, give birth, nurse their calves and - while they're in a nice romantic honeymoon destination - work on the next crop of baby whales.
The second claim to fame is as the most southerly vineyards in Africa - and it's well worth doing a tasting. This is not just a gimmick.
The other big attraction of this area is the great white shark. Dyer and Geyser Islands, off the small fishing village of Gansbaai offer probably the best shark cage diving in the world. A number of boats operate in the area - chumming to attract the sharks' attention and vying with each other for the best position. Do it soon, as there is increasing resistance to a practice that many people consider to be morally indefensible, ecologically destructive and dangerous.

There's loads more to do. There are three great nature reserves. Kogelberg in the west, which is a major hotspot of botanical diversity, offers fantastic hiking and an exciting white water rafting day trip. De Hoop, in the east, has some small game, great easy mountain bike trails, an escorted, portaged hiking trail, fun snorkelling, wonderful beaches and some awesome land-based whale watching. Slightly further east, the Bontebok National Park was proclaimed to protect the last few remaining bontebok - a beautiful antelope that is found only in the Western Cape. The Breede River, in the eastern part of the Overberg, has some quite fun rafting and canoeing trips and the only remaining hand-operated ferry in the country and fantastic fishing.

There is great paragliding and fun canoeing and sea kayaking near Hermanus, a gliding club in Swellendam, a good horse trail, great hiking and some fabulous mountain biking trails. There are fun boat trips and a long and exciting foefie slide (flying fox) on the Buffelsjag Dam, near Swellendam.

For the more culturally inclined, the mission villages of Genadendal and, particularly, Elim, hark back to a much quieter era. Interesting museums include the Drostdy Museum in Swellendam, the Old Harbour Museum in Hermanus, which has exhibits relating to fishing and whaling, and the small but fascinating Shipwreck Museum in Bredasdorp.
