Forest Creek Lodge & Spa

Forest Creek nestles in a gorge of the Steenkampsburg Mountains, set in a private nature reserve of the Mpumalanga escarpment. The gorge is softened only by a blanket of shrubs and trees which have grown in this malaria-free zone over millennia. It is only when one gets to the gate of Forest Creek Lodge that the rock-strewn grassland is left behind, one climbs up, and up, and enter this little enchanted world. For the international traveller, Forest Creek Lodge is an ideal place to relax and unwind after a long flight, a mere 130 km to the Kruger National Park, enjoy the treatments in the private Forest Spa, or just enjoy the tranquility of the bush. A private airstrip is located 8 km from the farm, from which we provide transfers to the lodge. At Forest Creek, guests will dine on a four-course d'hôte dinner served in our candle-lit dining room, as well as a choice of five-breakfast menus. We also have a small menu for lunch and weather permitting, we will cook on the braai. For those who wish to hike, lunch packs are available, and for those who have special diets, we request that you inform us prior to your arrival. The water at Forest Creek comes from a spring, and we will be bottling our own Forest Creek spring water. Forest Creek boasts a huge fireplace and again weather permitting, guests can enjoy meals and drinks outside on the veranda overlooking the valley. We are situated half way down the Steenkampberg mountain range, at an altitude ideally suited to the rapid growth of Rainbow and Brown trout. Our cold, clear perennial stream feeds the trophy dam in which these lovely fish abide in a truly beautiful setting. The dam is approximately a half hour walk from the lodge or can be reached by 4x4 vehicles, leaving a 10-minute walk. We practice catch and release of fish hooked, and rods are available for hire. One of our unique activities at Forest Creek is the hiking trails in the “Cloud Forest”. The trails are designed for the entire family, and are most suitable for the even not-so-fit person. Under this canopy of trees and at the edge of the mountain, one feels very small in comparison to the magical views. The walk to the waterfall is approximately 2 km, winding through the forest and criss-crossing the stream in several places under the canopy of large indigenous trees. One is likely to hear the baboons barking and spot the odd bush buck or Red duiker and see the Cinnamon doves, Narina trogon's and loeries that frequent the forest. In the wetter months, the ferns, orchids and wild mushrooms offer spectacular opportunities for the more photographic inclined. A tree platform, built in a large fig tree above the forest canopy, is an ideal stop for birders or to simply relax and enjoy a picnic. Scattered in the forest are remnants of old stone structures, some of which are supposedly several thousand years old and are under study at present. The forest is beautiful, friendly and safe. On this magnificent piece of land we hope we have catered for everyone, from luxury guest suites at the Main Lodge to the Forest Cottage and Bee Eater self-catering options. Forest Creek Lodge is also a haven for honeymooners, celebrating your first, fifth or fiftieth, you will be inspired by the romance of this incredibly exclusive, private place. Activities offered are bush baths, a forest spa, gazebo romantic private dinner, hiker’s picnic, lazy picnic, jet skiing, elephant rides, hiking, trout fishing, bird-watching, horse riding, mountain biking, clay pigeon shooting, and game drives., Forest Creek Lodge Dullstroom. If you take the self-catering option you are welcome to book meals and activities at the lodge, we supply firewood. Dinner is a 4 course meal R250.00 and breakfast is R120.00 per person. Activities include; Bush bath - set in a secluded spot, enjoy a 'bath' in the bush, with lots of bubbles. Forest spa - indulge yourself in our private spa overlooking the gorge, go home feeling relaxed and stress free. Gazebo romantic private dinner - spoil your loved one for a totally private candle lit dinner under the gazebo. Many a proposal of marriage has been accepted in this lovely setting! Hiker’s picnic; a picnic packed in a rucksack, get ready to hike to the waterfall! Lazy picnic; a picnic set out for you in a private spot, with champagne, a good one for the romantic at heart. Hiking; marked trails through the forest, along the stream on the way to the waterfall. Bird watching; we have a prolific variety of uncommon species of birds that can be seen, including a resident pair of black eagles. Horse riding; 4 km down the hill, book a ride in our scenic valley. Trout fishing; good clear water with rainbow trout. Clay pigeon shooting; an interesting and testing range for the novice and experienced shooters.

Reminiscent of a traditional African safari camp, Kapama Buffalo Camp offers a unique and intimate experience in the African bush. It is ideal for discovering big game Africa in true safari tented style without compromising on comfort. Ten luxury newly build canvas tents, each sleeping two, are set on wooden decks built on stilts over a steep-sided riverbank. Wooden walkways interconnect the rooms, which are all in the upper reaches of tall riverine trees. The river below rarely flows and antelopes are seen daily walking along the sandy riverbed. Each tented room has all the usual comforts of electricity, en-suite bathroom, safe, writing table, wardrobe, low impact climate control air-conditioner, mini-bar and tea/coffee facilities. The communal areas of Buffalo Camp are on the riverbank, where gardens of succulent aloes and euphorbia are tended around the thatched bar, dining room, pool terrace and campfire. But the thick African bush is just a glance away, inhabited by animals like lion, hyena and jackal whose calls can be heard in the dead of night. Lanterns, rather than electric lights, glow at night under the trees, creating a special intimate ambience particular to Buffalo Camp. With a maximum of 20 guests at Buffalo Camp, special attention is paid to personal service and the staff become like friends. Kapama Buffalo Camp is a truly authentic way to experience the African bush.

Mpumalanga South Africa

Mpumalanga Wellness & Spa Accommodation

Although Mpumalanga is not the only province in South Africa with excellent game viewing, national parks and luxury lodges, it's here that the safari experience has been perfected. About half the Kruger National Park is in this lovely province and there are so many private game reserves and lodges than you will have a hard time choosing. Like Limpopo Province to its immediate north, Mpumalanga straddles the escarpment between the Lowveld and the Drakensberg, so the different parts of the province have different characters. The Lowveld is hot and humid with broad-leaved forests and wide, slow rivers, while the Highlands are cool and green, with rolling grasslands, pine plantations, pockets of indigenous forest and cheerfully gurgling mountain streams and waterfalls. Most of the game is in the Lowveld, while the attractions of the Highlands include hiking, horse trails, river rafting and other adventure activities, such as gorge swings and abseiling.

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, near the town of Waterval Boven, is one of South Africa's most popular climbing destinations. The fly fishing in the Highlands area is awesome, particularly near the pretty town of Dullstroom, where there are loads of dams and streams well stocked with fat trout. There are awesome birds to be spotted, both in the game reserves and in the Highlands, where you're likely to see some montane grassland species, including the rare and endangered blue swallow. For a bird's eye view, rather than a view of birds, you can choose between microlight flights and gentle floats in a hot air balloon. Mpumalanga also has some fantastic paragliding and hang gliding launch sites - particularly along the escarpment. The mountain biking is great. Even with so much to do, many people visit Mpumalanga just to sight-see. The Panorama Route is a scenic meander taking in some fabulous sights, including the Blyde River Canyon, Bourke's Luck Potholes, the Three Rondawels, the Swadini Dam and many beautiful waterfalls and spectacular vistas including one called God's Window.

The Blyde River Canyon is the biggest vegetated canyon in the world. Second in size only to the Grand Canyon in the USA, and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia, it is lush and green with a plethora of plant and animal life and is a major centre of endemism. It's also where Antarctica and Madagascar split away from Africa a few million years ago during the break-up of the super-continent Gondwanaland. Also in the canyon, is Bourke's Luck Potholes - a fantastically contorted area of scenic potholes, and deeply scoured canyons. The Blyde is a great river to raft, with some pretty challenging rapids, but it also offers fun family paddling on a gentler section. The Three Rondawels are three conical hills and the Swadini Dam at the end of the canyon is a lovely stretch of water. Also on the Panorama Route is the rather cutesy museum town of Pilgrims Rest. The mines were active until the 1970s when they became terminally unprofitable, and the whole town was bought up by the provincial authorities to be converted to a tourist attraction. Museums, cute craft outlets, coffee shops, restaurants and the original hotel with its characterful bar bring the gold rush era vividly to life. Pilgrims Rest was the venue for the World Gold Panning Championships in 2005.

Mpumalanga's cultural attractions are particularly colourful. The iconic Ndebele artwork that is almost synonymous with South Africa is produced in the museum village of Botshabelo. Colourful beadwork and small painted articles can be admired and purchased while the magnificent painted buildings are - unfortunately - not for sale as souvenirs. They're well worth photographing, though. Kids will love the dinosaur park, just outside the deep and convoluted Sudwala Caves. Mpumalanga has a very interesting technical freshwater diving destination that will appeal to technical divers.

Note: If you are planning to travel to the north eastern parts of Mpumalanga or Swaziland please be aware that this region is malarial. Consult your doctor or travel clinic for advice and refer to our article on malaria.

Although Mpumalanga is not the only province in South Africa with excellent game viewing, national parks and luxury lodges, it's here that the safari experience has been perfected. About half the Kruger National Park is in this...
