Mfuwe Lodge is a safari lodge set in the most prolific game area of the South Luangwa. The perfect place to enjoy excellent game viewing and recharge your batteries. Set inside the park, just five minutes’ drive from the main gate, the lodge’s allure is instantly obvious. Beneath a canopy of ebony and mahogany, its thatched buildings are arranged around the banks of two lagoons where an endless stream of wildlife will keep you enthralled as you lounge on the open deck or take a dip in the swimming pool. This region of the park is renowned for its prolific game such as giraffe, buffalo, antelope and crocodile which are constant visitors to Mfuwe Lodge’s lagoon, whilst in November the local elephants regularly wander right through the lobby. Whether you stay overnight, or just have lunch en route to a bush camp, Mfuwe Lodge’s relaxed charm and enviable surroundings make it the perfect stopover. Mfuwe Lodge also offers you the chance to relax at its Bush Spa or buy a few mementos of your time in Zambia at our curio shop. We offer 18 thatched chalets from where you can enjoy your own private piece of Africa. Secluded covered verandahs look out over wallowing hippo’s and thirsty game in the lagoons, while the newly refurbished African interiors are the perfect place to wind down with their comfortable sitting rooms and en-suite bathrooms with walk-in showers. Walking safaris can be arranged on request, but the majority of outings are game drives, allowing guests to explore as much of this prolific region of the Luangwa Valley as possible. Drives are led by our experienced team of guides, setting out at first light, and then again in the late afternoon when the wildlife is at its most active. After sundowners, spotlights are used to pick out a new cast of nocturnal creatures.

You don’t need to leave your bed to see the wildlife, as from your unique vantage point you can watch as animals roam across the landscape, or swing through the trees above your head. There are three Stilted Chalets at this exclusive camp which is set on the riverbank beneath a soaring ebony grove. Each has its own raised verandah to loll on during the heat of the day, and an open-fronted en-suite bathroom with the same views over the tranquil waters. Kakuli is a seasonal bush camp on the confluence of the Luwi and Luangwa rivers. For many it marks the end of a walking safari from camp to camp following the course of the Luwi River. Whether Kakuli is used as a stopover in the middle of a walking trail or as a base for a more static wildlife safari, the game viewing and night drive safaris in this area are some of the best in Zambia. There are four spacious, traditional safari tents under shady thatched roofs, each with an open-air bathroom. All of the tents overlook the river with stunning views up and down this hippo-packed stretch of the Luangwa. A lovely thatched chitenje acts as the centre of camp. It is on a wooden deck overlooking the grazing lawn that leads down to the two rivers and is a perfect spot in which to relax and watch the river and the wildlife meander by. Guests are able to decide each day if they want to venture out on foot or with the vehicle. Most evenings however, you will want to explore the area after dark. This stretch of the Luangwa is fantastic for wildlife. It is bustling with predators and the best time to see them in action is during those first few hours of darkness. Night drive safaris from Kakuli have been known to provide guests with some of the most exciting game viewing in Zambia. It is certain that your wildlife safari at Kakuli will be one to remember. Kakuli is one of the few Zambian bushcamps to open in February and March. At this time of year the river is high, we gain access by boat and activities are either on the river or on foot in the drier, sandy areas that surround camp.

Zungulila Bushcamp is ideal for small, private groups and it delivers an authentic walking safari experience. It is a charming camp that embodies the essence of old Africa and a bygone era, with beautiful views onto the Kapamba River and an expansive plain where natural springs attract huge herds of game. Zungulila Bushcamp is eminently peaceful and available for private parties of four guests or more. Up to eight guests can enjoy the serenity of Zungulila in four spacious tents. Built under thatch roofs, each shaded tent has its own private bamboo verandah with views over an impressive variety of wildlife. With stylish interiors, en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold running water, outdoor showers and sunken plunge pools, you can enjoy the luxury. Two of the tents have queen-size beds while the other two have king-size beds. With limited roads in the area, activities are focused around walking, but to get even further afield, day and night game drives are also on offer. In the evening after wading through the river, we invite you to join your hosts for sundowners or sit around the campfire for a drink before recounting the day’s adventures over a starlit dinner.

Nsolo Bush Camp is situated on a bend in the Luwi River that runs through the heart of Zambia's south Luangwa National Park, a three hours' walk from Luwi Bushcamp. We are open from 20 May - 31 October. Accommodation in this luxury safari camp consists of four individually designed Chalets, each on raised wooden decks with high thatched roofs and private verandahs. The rooms are very spacious with stylish furnishings. As with most of our bush camps, the bathrooms have no roofs and are set under the shade of the trees above. At Nsolo, you don't usually have to search hard for your African safari experience. The wildlife frequents a waterhole in the dry riverbed in front of the camp and very often your most exciting game viewing is from the comfort of your own deck or from the central chitenje that houses the bar and small camp library. There is only a limited network of roads in this are and as a result, most of the game viewing activities are centred on walking safaris, although short night drives are usually offered as well. The Luwi River system is renowned for its lion population. Various pride territories overlap in this area and the cats use the dry riverbed as a thoroughfare and a means not only of locating their prey who come to drink, but also of locating their rivals who must be warned away. There are few African experiences more exciting than heading out on a walking safari early in the morning, hearing lions calling through the night, finding fresh tracks and following them. With voices hushed and hearts beating, your mind is suggesting there is a lion behind every bush.

There is a small pool alongside the bar within the thatched main chitenje, allowing guests to seek cool refuge after their morning's safari activities. Guests staying at Mchenja can choose whether they want to view their wildlife on foot or from an open game viewing vehicle. Nsefu Camp is situated on a sweeping bend of the Luangwa River, just 12 km north of Tena Tena. Nsefu was the first game camp in Zambia and dates back to the early fifties. The camp can accommodate up to 12 guests in traditional rondavels with en-suite semi-open air bathrooms, while the view of the river is superb and includes a terraced area where game grazes during the day. The bar, tucked in beside a huge dormant termite mound, overlooks a waterhole that is very productive for game, especially leopard at night. Wonderfully remote and peaceful, the site is a relaxed 3-hour bushwalk from Kaingo. Set on the banks of the Mwamba River, a tributary of the Luangwa, the camp enjoys shady views of perennial water-holes. The chalets are uniquely designed with two large skylights (protected by mosquito gauze) allowing you to experience sleeping under the stars. These three reed and thatch en-suite bungalows also have solar lighting, flush toilets and hot showers. The accommodation reflects a thoughtful balance between back-to-nature simplicity and essential comforts. Meals are of the same high standard as Kaingo, and the bush-style dining/bar area or 'chitenge' is set under the deep shade of huge ebony trees. A spectacular sunset viewing-point on top of a large termite mound and a glowing campfire under the stars completes the camp's friendly and personal atmosphere. The game around Mwamba is excellent; large herds of buffalo, eland and Cookson's wildebeeste are followed by the 'Mwamba pride', which consists of six beautiful lionesses and two classicly dark maned males. Good leopard sightings are also common due to the large numbers of impala and puku in the area. Elephants use the Mwamba's waterholes regularly and there is a large bull which frequents the camp. Another appeal of Mwamba is the surrounding terrain. The land varies tremendously from wide open plains such as Lion Plain and Eland Plain, interspersed by shady mopane/crocodile bark woodland with short grass, and bordered by Combretum thickets along the Mwamba river. The area is excellent for walking safaris and game drives. We also offer over-night 'camp-outs' (sleeping open under a net, close to the camp-fire) on request. These trips allow visitors to get a sense of the absolute wildness of the National Park as there are no other camps or trails for miles around. One of the most unusual sights is the Baobab 'forest' near Mwamba Sands. As Mwamba is a specialised camp and is an extension to Kaingo, the small staff have been hand-picked and will work tirelessly to ensure guests are comfortable and relaxed.
