Glen Doone rests in the pristine Witteberg Mountains that forms part of the south-eastern Drakensberg. Within walking distance from the tranquil Karringmelk Stream, you'll find the charming fly-fishing cottage tucked away in the mountains.
Situated on the scenic Joubert's Pass, the farm is 35 km from Lady Grey and 40 km from Barkley East. Joubert's Pass is the third highest mountain pass in South Africa at 2236 m above sea level. With a gradient of 1:6 this 48 km-long pass is very steep in places. Although a normal vehicle can negotiate the route with slow and careful driving, a vehicle with higher ground clearance is preferable. After heavy rains and snowfall, a 4x4 is necessary.
Glen Doone offers excellent wild trout fly fishing in crystal clear waters of the Karringmelk Stream. The exquisite natural surroundings can be explored and enjoyed while hiking, cycling or sightseeing, at your own leisure.
The cottage offer luxurious self-catering accommodation with five en-suite rooms, a fully equipped kitchen and indoor and outdoor braai facilities. Families can soak up the sun while kids enjoy the splash pool. Glen Doone is a fully operational farm with bonsmara cattle and a commercial flock of sheep. A small American quarter horse stud is also part of the Glen Doone family.
For the enthusiast, a variety of mountain wildlife can be spotted. Bird species includes the ground woodpecker, bearded vulture, black eagle, fish eagle, giant kingfisher, malachite kingfisher and many more. Buck includes mountain reedbuck, cape grysbok, grey rhebok, and if you are lucky, fallow deer can be spotted in the mountains.
