Montagu Guano Cave Resort is a hidden gem located at the foot of the Langeberg mountain range in the Klein Karoo, where you can find healing and rest for your soul. Montagu is on the scenic Route 62, only a two- hour drive from Cape Town and the town of Oudtshoorn.
Just 6 km outside of Montagu, on the road to Barrydale, awaits a day of activities and exploration. There are plenty of activities to keep you busy, including tractor and horse rides to the cave, pony rides, hiking trails, 4x4 trails, fishing, an animal petting farm and a coffee shop.
For in-house guests there are four beautiful rock pools, two hot-water swimming pools and one cold-water swimming pool, as well as a hot-water kiddies pool. There is also a lapa with braai facilities at the pools for pool lunches, an open-air amphitheatre, and a large playground and jungle gym for the kids.
The Montagu Cave, also called the Guano Cave, consists of a large, high chamber at the back of which is an opening to a smaller and longer tunnel-like cave once filled with bat guano. In the 1890s, the guano was emptied out. Housing thousands of bats, the cave goes back as far as hundreds of metres, some of which are still to be explored. A bushman painting greets you at the mouth of the cave, telling you stories of a long time ago.
In 1964, an American archaeologist, Charles Keller, excavated and dynamited a third of the main chamber of the cave and found, buried among ash and red sand, several thousand artefacts shaped like spear-heads. His conclusion was that the cave was a factory site in which, some 20 000 to 50 000 years ago, hand-axes and other tools were made.
