Bloemfontein is sort of the Cinderella city of South Africa. It's stuck out there on the N1 between Cape Town and Johannesburg. It has no Table Mountain, no ocean, and no big-city vibe. And no rush hour traffic, no road rage and no urban sprawl. It's just a nice little city in the middle of the country. The name, Bloemfontein, means Spring of Flowers - a rather pretty name that it does actually live up to. The city is planted with thousands of rose bushes, which makes for a fabulously colourful roadside display. A small nature reserve, strangely enough called Naval Hill, right in the middle of the city carries the green theme a bit further.

Still on the floral and green theme, the Orchid House is a must for lovers of this beautiful plant family, of which South Africa has numerous species, and the Free State Botanical Gardens, on the outskirts of the town, is a real delight. Covering 70ha, large areas have been left in a close to natural state, showing the indigenous vegetation of the area, and creating a habitat for small game. There are lovely walks, a lawn to chill out on, a dam with a bird hide, a restaurant, an environmental education centre and an indigenous plants nursery. The more formal section of the garden includes a medicinal plants display and a garden highlighting water-conserving ways of gardening.

There's the usual smattering of art galleries and some interesting museums, including the War Museum and the National Women's Monument - a poignant reminder if ever there was one of the futility and downright stupidity of war. OK - so Bloemfontein is not exactly the tourist mecca of the universe, but it's a good stopover place if you're driving the N1, and it's probably worth spending a day there if you have the time. There are decent restaurants, some nice pubs and some good live music venues. It's also the closest city to the Kingdom of Lesotho.

Remarkable Rayton
To whom it may concern, from a business point of view, we have been complete been amazed by the hospitality and super friendlyness that our technical teams have had the pleasure of experiencing whilst in Rayton. Our company specializes in the testing and inspection of pressure vessels, and have been in and out of Bloemfontein a lot over the past four months. We made the brilliant choice to use the accomodation of Barristers Inn, and all i can say is ; we were blown away. Their facilites, out of this world service, rates and accomodation is wow ! i wish the owners all the best, and i will recom...

Fichardt Park - the ideal resting place
Fichardt Park, situated in the southern suburbs of Bloemfontein, is ideal for a restful evening after travelling from whereever in the country. t is some 10 kilometers from the two Universities and you will not be disturbed in your sleep by sounds from nearby "student houses". It is witin walking distance from the Rosepark Hospital, which is situated within a kilometer from the Southers Shopping Centre. Indeed a place to rest from your travelling fatique!

The Student Suburb
Universitas used to be one of the upper class areas in Bloemfontein about 15 years ago, but has since become a suburb where mostly the students live. With the University, two major high schools and a hospital all in the same suburb, it makes for a very busy and noisy place. Crime has also increased in this suburb which is a huge shame, but unfortunately the truth. It used to be and still is one of the most central suburbs to live in, but unfortunately not the most sort after one anymore. Sorry for being so direct.Jenny

Great suburb surrounding not one but two shopping centres. But, a lesser known fact is that being adjacent to the Tempe military base in Bloemfontein, it was used as a training ground for Union Defence Force (now-SANDF) troops during WWII!Obviously prior to being developed with sufficently wide open spaces for live-firing exercises remote from the surrounding suburbs of Westdene, Waverley and Bayswater!

Brandwag Brandwag

My Brandwag experience
I travel annually to Bloemfontein for the National tennis tournament. Almost every year I try a different area. Last year I found the perfect area and that is Brandwag. It is central and has easy access to the shopping malls which are within walking distance. It also has easy access to all the other facilities. The area is close but very quiet and tranquil as well. In fact I found a lovely Guest house called Boa Vida which I will use every time I go back.

Universitas- central point
My daughter is currently studying in Bloemfontein, so when i take her back to Varsity, we always have a car load to take back. Girls always 10 x times more baggage than boys....So we are always looking for a palce to stay for a weekend close and near to the University. Universitas is always the place we tend to choose as it is very central and doesn't matter which bed & breakfast or overnight place you choose, then Univeristas is close from all angles. Good place to stay and take a breather before the next load .....Zoe Scholtz - East London

Brandwag Brandwag
Suburb of Bloemfontein

The suburb of choice!
Whether one is from the Cape, Gauteng, Lesotho or around the Free State, Brandwag is the place to be due to its central location, proximity to Bloemfontein’s major shopping malls, hotels, hospitals and the University! It offers a wide variety of services, options and activities, which are mostly within walking distance. This is a very quiet and peaceful place with a mix of both the sometimes much needed ‘hype’ while at the same time offering just the required levels of tranquility for one to relax and unwind.

Hilton (Bloemfontein) Hilton (Bloemfontein)
Suburb of Bloemfontein

Hilton
Hilton is probably one of the oldest of Bloemfontein's suburbs, and originally was the suburb of choice for more affluent. Many old Victorian & Tudor style mansions graced the main street, mostly all were owned by former Ostrich Feather kings of the day. Hilton is now a mixture of old and young , rich and poor, and has many light industries. Situated only 2km from Bloemfontein Central City, It is convenient for business people.
