The Free State climate is typical of the interior plateau with rain falling in summer, cold winters and lots of sunshine.
Places like Clarens, Golden Gate Highlands Park and Harrismith in the Eastern Highlands are an exception, lying at a much higher altitude with regular snow falls covering the peaks in winter. In summer the valleys are covered with lush green grass.
