Zeekoevlei is one of the largest bodies of natural fresh water in the Western Cape. It is fed by the Big Lotus River and the Little Lotus River and via groundwater. Canoeing, paddleski rowing, sailing, kite-surfing and windsurfing are activities that people engage in on the water. The Van Blommenstein Park is a small pocket of natural landscape where people walk their dogs or come to fish.
The big body of water is without lights at night so that on clear nights many stars and planets can be observed after dark.

The big body of water is without lights at night so that on clear nights many stars and planets can be observed after dark. The bird life around the vlei is rich. Sunbirds, doves and pigeons, cuckoos, avocets, plovers, cormorants, pelicans, flamingos, and fish eagles are some of the common birds that are easily spotted here. Patient and lucky hikers see mongoose, water mongoose, and otters. Zeekoevlei is small, but it is a beautiful natural area right in the heart of the city.
