We recently spent 3 days in Yzerfontein, and I can recommend it for the tranquility it offers. A very pleasant beach hiking trail and a good selection of restaurants to choose from completed the enjoyable stay.

We drove up to Yzerfontein one day while we were holidaying in Paternoster. We were pleasantly surprised and promised ourselves that our next West Coast vacation would be here. Well, it did happen that way and Yzerfontein was all and more of what it promised.
We spent a week at a superb guesthouse on the beach and we loved ever minute of our time there. The pros far outnumber the cons, but if there is one con that irritated and mystified us was that the couple of restaurants in the place were almost always closed, even when many tourists were there. We also discovered that those that did open at times also wanted bookings to be done, so as a result we spent one or two evenings eating bread and jam.
We loved the place and we will be back!

My husband and I took a drive into Yzerfontein quite by accident one day, as we had been exploring the West Coast. Wtih the drive in, I thought to myself, how dry and dead this place is. But boy was I pleasantly surprised! What a picturesque little town. I fell in love with it and knew my family would love it too, so that was our next holiday destination! We spent 3 days in Yzerfontein and will definitely be back.

Yzerfontein was much bigger than i thought it would be but still quite beautiful. We did not really do much except spend time on the beach with the kids and for that it was perfect (except for the water temp of course!). It's a great distance from CT though and I am sure we will be back.

Yzerfontein was a complete surprise. So many times we overlooked it...gravitating to its more popular neighbors. We found it to be beautiful, and still very untouched. We will definitely be back.

What a stunning place, our stay at Sea Cottage was great, an amazing view, quiet and tranquil.
We had the best food at Die Rooi Granaat.
It's a great place to stay if you want to visit the surrounding towns like Darling and Langebaan.
We just loved it and it added great memories to our honeymoon.

Yzerfontein is a fishing village on the West Coast of Africa, near Cape Town in South Africa along Route 27. The lovely unspoiled stretches of beaches and abundance of sea life and flora has made it one of the west coast's favourite holiday destinations and the travellers doorstep to the African West Coast. Yzerfontein offers plenty for the nature lover, with long walks along Yzerfontein Beach to view whales, coastal birds and flora, fields of wild flowers during spring and visits to the West Coast National Park. Animals that may be seen in reserves around Yzerfontein are: eland, bontebok, kudu, gemsbok, springbok, wildbeest, steenbok, duiker, hartebeest, Cape mountain zebra, rooikat (caracal) african wild cat, genet, bat eared fox. A traditional South African meal can be enjoyed at the Geelbek Restaurant inside the nature reserve.
There is a slipway at the harbour and fishermen angle from rock and boat. Fishing boats cause great excitement when the fish has been plentiful and the boats come home laden with snoek (barricuda), the traditional food of the Cape West Coast. There are many other activities to enjoy in Yzerfontein including skiing, windsurfing, surfing, kiting, hiking, whalewatching and swimming. There are many restaurants for dining in Yzerfontein and nearby Darling boasts lovey wine farms. In Langebaan (30 minutes away) there is a Dance Club and Casino at Club Mykonos. Langebaan being a great spot for watersports and dining out.
The Cape West Coast supports a rich diversity of birds and Yzerfontein is home to the Crowned Cormorant, African Black Oystercatcher and Bank Cormorant. Viewing points in the West Coast Nature Reserve are a splendid way to enjoy the bird life of the area. Dassen Island is also nearby with its renowned colony of African penquins (Spheniscus demersus). The only penguin species that breeds in Africa.
The nearby West Coast Fossil Park boasts a large collection of extinct animal fossils, showcasing life in the area 5 million years ago.
Have a look at the Lime Kilns as you drive towards Yzerfontein from Route 27.
Bloubergstrand is just 30 minutes drive away with shopping malls, cinema's and a lovely beachfront.
Enjoy a drive to Darling (15 minutes) and see world famous Pieter-Dirk Uys as Tannie Evita live at The Perron Theatre.
Yzerfontein: This tranquil village is just what you need to unwind after a hectic week. Perfect weekend getaway for those from Cape Town and surrounds and wholly suitable for a lovely long stay for those from far and wide. Peaceful and safe. You will feel like you are in paradise.
Spear Chukka cottage is located in a quiet corner of Yzerfontein on the edge of the West Coast Nature Reserve which borders Yzerfontein to the north. Thanks

A friend wrote of Yzerfontein:
"ROTTEN, STINK'IN, CRUMMY, LITTLE PLACE....DON'T GO THERE!!!! EVER!!!!!! (We want it all for ourselves!!!!!)"
And perhaps that sums up most people's reactions after visiting Yzerfontein - don't tell the crowds about it, it's too special to have it spoilt. It has everything you'd want from a small seaside town plus West Coast whales, dolphins, flowers, glorious birds, hiking trails, fynbos, fishing, boating, surfing, para-sailing, contemplating at the labyrinth, top-notch restaurants, friendly, helpful residents, and so much more.
It's definitely worth a visit ... or two ... or three :)

An easy drive from Cape Town, the little harbour town of Yzerfontein is a great beach destination and very popular during spring and summer. Ocean views sweep towards Dassen Island and 16 Mile Beach stretches all the way to the West Coast National Park. Select fresh snoek from the Saturday market for an evening braai. Treat yourself to stroopwafels (or other Dutch and traditional South African dishes) at Kaijaiki Country Inn and Restaurant.
