Wonderboom was named after the massive fig tree (Focus salicifolia) which was found a thousand years ago (1836) by the Voortrekkers on the northern side of the Magaliesberg Mountains. Wonderboom is the Afrikaans word for "Wonder Tree" or" Miracle Tree". The Wonderboom tree's branches reach over 50 meters in diameter and the highest branches reach up to 23 meters. Exceptional size for a fig tree. The tree is protected from human traffic around the trunk and roots. As it has grown, its outlaying branches have rooted themselves around the parent tree. This repeated until there are now three circles of daughter trees encircling the mother fig, with 13 distinct trunks. A must to visit during your stay in the northern parts of Pretoria. The tree is situated in a Nature Reserve with some wild life and picnic spots where you can enjoy and relax a whole day.
