Description

Upington is situated on the banks of the Orange River in the Northern Cape. Surrounded by bright green irrigated vineyards, this area is known as the Green Kalahari. (The rest of the Kalahari, while not actually a true desert, is classified as thirstland, and is most definitely not green.)

Upington is a pleasant town with some lovely guest houses, hotels and restaurants. The Kalahari Oranje Museum Complex offers an insight into the history of the rather hardy folk who’ve made this town their home over the last couple of hundred years. The museum sells beautifully packaged dried fruit from the enormous South African Dried Fruit Co-operative just outside the town. Upington is the centre of the Orange River wine region and you could do a tasting in town at a co-op of five different cellars.

Still on a fruity note, an island in the Orange River boasts one of the longest and most dense date palm avenues in the southern hemisphere – it’s over a kilometre long.

For such a small town it has a relatively large collection of animal statues. A donkey outside the museum pays tribute to the contribution of this humble beast in the development of the region, and a camel outside the police station commemorates the recalcitrant beasts on which the police patrolled the vast Kalahari in the past.

You could enjoy a gentle sundowner cruise on the river or, for something much more exciting, head to the Augrabies Falls National Parkwhere you could do some white water rafting and view the magnificent waterfall and canyon at its heart.

There is also a gentler canoeing trip, a quite taxing hike, and a fun day trip consisting of a short paddle, a walk and a mountain bike ride. The Augrabies Park also has some small game, as does the Spitskop Nature Reserve, which is conveniently situated about 13km north of the town.

Upington is the biggest town in its immediate area and the second biggest in the Northern Cape, after Kimberley. There is a small airport with a limited number of scheduled flights.

Good position for visits to the Kgalagadi Game Park and the Augrabries water falls. Also has lovely picnic spot almost in town next to the Orange River comprising of boat rides along the river on Sakkie se Arkie (a great adventure). Interesting landmark 'The Mill' craft centre. More than enough accommodation.

BELLVUE in Upington, the river city, is a calm and serene neighhbourhood. Bellvue has its own Union grounds where ALL sports are played like soccer , rugby and netball and hockey, etc as well as a swimming pool to cool off in summer as it is hot in Upington. All major churches are situated in Bellvue area namely EA Swatz Conregational , AGS Church , URC Church , Spadereen CHurch, Lutherian CHurch and a PARK for kids/teenagers to relax and play in it! Bellvue is just 5 minutes away for SterKinekor Cinema , Eiland Resort , KFC , Steers , Wimpy and SPUR!! Organise shuttles and tours on request!! You are welcome and we looking forward to have you here!!

Upington is the middle of all the scenic places like : Augrabies water Falls The Orange river wineries The Namakwaland flowers The Kalahari desert Although this town is growing by the year. it still got that small town feel and is a great get away from the city to enjoy nature and the friendliest people. We were only passing through and cannot comment on things to do as we slept and went. Spent a very comfortable night in a b and b. We were very impressed by the condition of the roads around Upington and the picnic spots on the side of the road which were immaculate. The people in Upington were friendly and we had an overall impression of being welcome.

The first impression you have when entering Upington, is one of suprize. This oasis in the middle of the Kalahari, with winelands and fruit trees everywhere. Upington is a city built next to the orange river, and with it's friendly people, and multitude of interesting places, has become our destination for overnight accommodation, when travelling to namibia, or Botswana. This place has a laidback feel, and has a oldenday feel to it. The city centre is modern, but still retains that colonial feel. I can recommend this pearl to any traveller!

Destination with a difference - not the usual beach getaway but a lot of history goes down in Upington and it has good surrounds - game reserves wineries and orchards all within easy reach.

Upington is a lovely town situated on the Orange River. The Island has a good deal of wildlife and birds on it. We only visited one restaurant in Town and the food was really good. The Museums and older building were interesting.

I know Upington a little bit as I was one of the first people doing my army training at 8SAI. For my daugter's husband it was a good experience as he only knows South Africa start and end at Gauteng. My wife said she can go on pension in Upington as all the people there speak Afrikaans.

I'd move to Upington tomorrow if I could, and that's from one visit. It was a peaceful, clean and friendly town. The place was magic, even if it was very hot.

We were on our way to Namibia and Upington is the sort of Last City stop to stock up and/or browse for last minute 4X4 items and/or fix any 4X4 or auto-electrical problem before you enter Namibia for one's overlanding experience. Our Isuzu KB 280 bakkie occured a problem with its air-con which were fixed by Car&Driver in Upington! Phew, what a life saver that was, as we were only 2 days into our 29 Days of overlanding to Namibia!

Although we only spent one night in Upington, the friendliness of the people was a big plus for the town. We went to dinner at Bi-Lo Restaurant and boy can I recommend their fish and garlic rolls. They went out of their way to accommodate us as the place was full. The waitresses were friendly, helpful, fast. The manager sure is doing the right thing so keep it up. We also visited the wine cellars. Went into the FNB which was spotlessly clean. The town was its normal busy self and we just had quick ride through it on our way home. Recommended for sure as there are really some beautiful places to stay there.
