Description

Underberg is a thriving little town along the Sani Saunter in the southern Drakensberg, known to many as the home of the annual Splashy Fen Music Festival. Hundreds of festival folk head to the Underberg region to join the Easter weekend packed with music, art and crafts. It’s also renowned for its breath-taking scenery and superb fly-fishing, hiking and mountain biking opportunities.

The Sani Saunter stretches from Loteni in the north to Bushman’s Nek in the south, and include Underberg and the pretty twin town of Himeville. Both towns are brilliant fly-fishing destinations; with the Underberg-Himeville Trout Fishing Club hold rights to a mind-boggling area – 60 dams and 160 km of river!

I'd have to agree with Zel...as we drove into Underberg on Saturday morning, we were hit with the view of the snow capped mountains, and the 1st signs of spring. A view to take your breath away when you are accustomed to seeing concrete in all directions! We were only spending 3 days in Underberg, so were quite thrilled to have found a website with many of the restaurants and activities available, saving us some precious time - it was a treat for my husband to play a bit of golf on a different course, a trip to the museum brought nostalgic memories of my grandfather (there are quite a few references to the war), and the website drew our attention to Cobham, where we did a bit of hiking and picnicked next to a beautiful river. Wherever we went, we were greeted with friendliness and the town boasts some of the most hospitable folk I've met in some time. We look forward to taking a longer holiday in the summer months, when we'll schedule a trip up the much talked about Sani Pass, and hopefully get to do some tubing! Thank you to all those who made it a memorable trip.

The view as one arrives at Underberg is breath taking certainly tugs at my heart strings. Stop off at the Lemon Tree Bristro for a superb cappachino and freshly baked cake before travelling on to your chosen accomodation. During ones stay pop through to Himeville and visit the Himeville Arms Hotel for a meal or drink, the museum which is most interesting or Moorcraft Manor Country Hotel for an unforgettable meal in the dining room or terrace. Soak up the warm sun and enjoy the outstanding mountain views in the fresh crisp air. A trip to the Sani pass Hotel or a drive up Sani Pass is always something worthwhile but dont forget your passports. Otherwise stay on the Underberg side where you could explore the little shops and art studios take a drive to Bushmans Nek Hotel or Drakensburg Gardens Hotel, Lake Navarone or the Duck and Spoor. For those who enjoy the outdoors there is fishing, hiking, golf, birding, horse riding and in summer river rafting or tubing. So many wonderful places to stay with wonderful hospitable people and so much to do and see for all ages. On your departure dont forget to pop into Pucketty Farm Stall for your fresh home made bread. See you there soon.

Nestled in the lush green farmlands beneath the splendour of the majestic Drakensburg mountains is the quaint farming town of Underberg. But do not under-estimate Underberg as a tourist destination. For the adventurous there are hiking and horse back trails , many photographic opportunities, rock art, elegant hot air ballooning and the thrill of taking a 4x4 to the top of Sani Pass. For the sporty there is golf on truly scenic courses, fly fishing in abundant pools and other activities such bowls and swimming at nearby holiday resorts. For family holidays or those romantic week end aways, Underberg offers a wide range of accomodation in hotels and and BandB's and numeorus tour operators willing to make your holiday truly memorable. From nature reserves to cheese-making to the historical place of interest, The Old Prison and Museum, Underberg with its many restaurants and interesting shops will delight your at every turn.

I am a city girl, surrounded by the craziness of every day life. My experience at Underberg was breath traking. The thing that I loved the best was the tranquility and the crispness of the fresh air. I think if there is anywhere you can find some peace and relaxation is at Underberg. Going on a morning stroll is so refreshing. Thank you Underberg for providing such a great atmosphere that I can downtime at. Regards Rekha Singh

Only good for going up the Sani pass but only if you have a 4X4 or SUV. With a normal car very boring... Interesting Museum close by in Himeville.
