We expected a small Karoo town...dusty streets, a variety of houses, and a character of its own. Many show pride in their abodes and small gardens, other showing some neglect. It's difficult to appraise the town on our short stay. It's just unfortunate that our stay started off on the 'wrong footing'. The town seemed peaceful, but as dark approached, we didn't have time to evaluate the town. We were awakened by loud dogs barking, however...the town criers, perhaps?

Unfortunately many of the towns in the platteland are suffering because the railways have gone bust. It was the lifeblood for these communities.
I can remember that the school at Trompsburg used to have one of the top cadet detachments in the Free State and they won many trophies with their drill squad and drummies.
