The biggest reason why anyone would visit the little Karoo dorpie of Sutherland lies 18 km outside the village in the direction of Fraserburg. On this arid hilltop you'll find the largest telescope in the Southern Hemisphere – SALT (Southern African Largest Telescope). With zero light pollution and cloudless night skies, these enormous telescopes probe the stars, planets and galaxies. Elsie's Peak Walk offers fabulous views of False Bay, Fish Hoek, Simon’s Town and Glencairn. On a clear day you can see all the way to Hangklip. The route is steep in places but requires minimal fitness. The trail can be reached from either Fish Hoek or Glencairn Heights on the other side. If you plan to start in Fish Hoek, use the car park on Kommetjie Road and climb up the adjacent steps to the mountain trail. Duration: 2 hours Difficulty: Easy Distance: 2.5 km

The trail is 15 km long and its halfway point is 1370 m above sea level, overlooking the Matrosberg’s peak. The trail has a difficulty grading of 3 and takes 4 to 5 hours to complete. This self-drive course requires a 4x4 vehicle with low range and high clearance. The trail is open all year round.

Lonehill Nature Reserve

The Lonehill Nature Reserve stands out as a lone hill on the northern border of Jozi's suburbs, some 28km north of the city centre. It is a reminder of what Johannesburg used to look like before it was settled: rocky veld with small streams trickling through it, dotted with shrubs, small trees and knee-high grasses. A popular walk about 200m north of the hill is a small dam called Lonehill Loch. A short walk up will bring you to the top with views of the city. The area is fenced and locked, but unlocked on the weekends, allowing hikers and picnickers to climb to the hilltop, or just lay out a picnic blanket in the surrounding grassy area. Lonehill is also an extremely significant Stone Age site – it has three Stone Age furnaces dating to 1600. Bits of slag have been found near the site of the furnaces, on large flat rocks with indentations in them, obviously used for grinding. Near the furnace site is another area where pottery was manufactured, fenced like the furnace area.

Older and more adventurous scamps can giddy up on the ponies or zoom up the tracks on quad bikes. On sunny days they can even go slip sliding down the inflatable waterslide. Most of the rides are kid-powered – giving small folk plenty of exercise in a fun and natural way. Bugz has two large sandpits with colourful jungle gyms, slides, swings and numerous play apparatus to crawl under or climb over. There are also delightful playhouses, a tree house and even a castle, and if there are no parties in progress, kids are free to romp around here to their heart’s content. (Bugz is also a popular birthday party venue.) Need to know? Open every day except on Christmas Day. Ticket sales close at 16:30, but rides stay open until 17:00. Token rides are only open on weekends, school holidays and public holidays. From May until mid-September, limited or no-token rides will be available. In the event of rainy weather in summer, limited or no-token rides may be available.
