Lions Head Walk

Lions Head Walk

Hiking Trail in Table Mountain National Park
Lions Head proudly surveys Table Bay, Robben Island and the City Bowl on one side and Camps Bay on the other. The panoramic views are spectacular. It is the most awesome full moon hike – aim to summit at sunset. Remember to take your camera. Park your vehicle on Signal Hill Road at the starting point. Most of the route is fairly easy but it is steep in places. A short scramble up a rock face via a chain ladder will get you to the top. There is an alternate route without chains but this section is still quite vertical. Duration: 1.5 hours Difficulty: Moderate (some rock scrambling) Distance: 2 km one way Warning: Take extra care on the descent if hiking after dark

Marutswa Forest Hiking Trails

Marutswa Forest Hiking Trails

Hiking Trail in Bulwer
The Marutswa Forest Project started in 2004 and aims to promote the conservation of Bulwer's unique biodiversity. The indigenous forest is managed by Ezemvelo Wildlife and offers three forest trails all varying in intensity. All the trails start at the visitors centre and end along the same route. The contour trail is suitable for anyone and is the easiest trail as it is completely flat. Visitors will first pass through the rehabilitation section before entering the forest. The trail is approximately 1275 m with boardwalks and steps along the way. The walk ends on the grasslands with distant views over the rural landscape. The tanglewood detour is slightly steeper as it branches off the contour path up a slope for about to 10 to 15 m before adjoining with the contour path again. The terrace traverse is the steepest trail. It rises up through the grasslands before entering the forest at the base of the scree slopes. It then trails along the terrace before sloping down through giant boulders to join the tanglewood detour.

Gerickes Point

Gerickes Point

Beaches in Sedgefield
Popular with locals and nature lovers, Gericke’s Point is one of the Garden Route’s best-kept secrets. You can easily spend an entire day in this stunning and fascinating place. This rocky landmark resembles a lion’s head and the top offers a great vantage point to watch Southern Right whales during their calving season. You might even see the resident pod of Humpback dolphins that frequent the Swartvlei bay. Shy of boats, they avoid harbour areas and that is probably why they keep returning to this lovely quiet bay. Gericke’s Point has impressive weathered sandstone cliffs that are actually fossilised dunes – some of the highest dunes in South Africa are right here. Colonies of Cape and White Breasted Cormorants nest on the cliffs. Seagulls, herons and oystercatchers can often be seen from the shore. At low tide the exposed rock pools are fascinating to explore – take along the excellent Two Oceans - field guide to South Africa's marine life. The deeper pools are great for snorkeling and swimming. Keen for a nocturnal beach adventure? Do a guided ‘Moonlight Meander’ from Swartvlei Beach to Gericke’s Point with local expert, Judy Dixon and witness the nocturnal antics of rocky coastline creatures.
