Arangieskop Hiking Trail is a tough trek up and down the Langeberg Mountain range in Dassieshoek Nature Reserve. The first day starts with a vigorous 9.5 km climb and is followed by an equally challenging 11 km decent the following day. The cosy stone hut built into the rock face is a great refuge after the challenging first day. Apart from knockout views over Koo Valley, this gem of an overnight hut is equipped with an indoor fireplace, Aga stove, flushing loos, solar lights, and even a donkey boiler for hot showers. Duration: 2 days Difficulty: Tough Distance: 20.5 km Warning: Winter conditions can be extreme with occasional snowfalls making the downward route hazardous.

The 16 km route from the parking area to Groot Kliphuis is easy-going, following a short section of the Kliphuis River and then swings to the east. Hikers pass incredible rock formations before joining the Groot Kliphuis to Perdevlei Trail. There is a fantastic swimming spot and plentiful water. Ericas and disas bloom prolifically in season along this route. Crossing the streams can be difficult during winter. Duration: 4 hours Difficulty: Easy to moderate Distance: 16 km

Dutoitskop Trail starts at the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve office on Franschhoek Pass. The out-and-return route climbs 700 m up to the summit of Dutoitskop. From here, the awesome views extend over the Franschhoek Valley and Wemmershoek Mountains. Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve is part of the UNESCO declared Boland Biosphere Reserve. The remarkable diversity of fynbos includes beautiful proteas, pincushions, ericas, restios and bulbs. Perlemoen Hiking Trail

The Perlemoen trail is a three-day hiking route stretching across the coast from Quoin Point Nature Reserve, along Pearly Beach, to Gansbaai. The less energetic can book the day two or three hiking trail for a shorter experience. On day one, the trail starts at De Dam, and leads you along the coast to Buffelsjag (15 km). You will have the option of walking a further seven km to Pearly Beach. On day two, you'll walk the beach to Franskraal (12 km) and on day three, Gansbaai to Die Plaat (eight km). The trail is Green Flag accredited (HOSA) and boasts some of the most spectacular coastal scenery, including rocky cliffs, swimming beaches, indigenous fynbos and caves. Hikers have the option of budget self-catering or luxury B&B accommodation.

St Georges Strand is Port Elizabeth's most northern beach stretching all the way up to the Coega Harbour breakwater. A long jetty heads out into the sea from the sand dunes. Although the water is blissfully warm, take care as surf conditions can be dangerous. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer holiday season. Be prepared to walk a fair distance to the beach from the parking area.
