Start at Silvermine Dam car park and follow the jeep track beyond the reservoir wall. Look out for the gorgeous King Proteas blooming in autumn. Cat’s Pass Trail starts with a steep 2.5 km ascent of the old Cat’s Pass in Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve. Built in 1819, the route offers stunning views of the fynbos reserve and Franschhoek Valley. From the summit, the trail then descends for 8 km. Historic points of interest include Muller’s Bridge, Jan Joubergat Bridge, the Cat’s Toll House and the old outspan, the resting place for travellers and their oxen. The trail is clearly marked and well maintained. Permits and maps are available at the Franschhoek Tourism Office, the Protea Hotel or the Huguenot Museum. Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve is part of the UNESCO declared Boland Biosphere Reserve. The remarkable diversity of fynbos includes beautiful proteas, pincushions, ericas, bulbs and restios. The breath-taking Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve is one of the Cape Floral Region Protected Areas, collectively a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Covering roughly 200-square kilometres of pristine mountainous terrain, the ‘Valley of the Baboons’, is one of the largest wilderness conservation areas in South Africa. Just 120 kilometres west of Port Elizabeth, this awesome wilderness playground has much to offer nature lovers and outdoor adventurers. The eastern side of the reserve starts at the Komdomo Campsite. From here the road winds 250 kilometres through the incredibly scenic and craggy Groot River Port towards Willowmore in the west. A paradise for adventurous and active types, the vast mountainous landscape offers a unique wilderness experience with a plethora of things to do. These include rock climbing, mountaineering, camping, wildlife viewing, mountain biking, fishing, scenic drives, bird watching and 4x4 trails. The diverse habitats support over 1,000 different plant species including the striking Erica and Protea families as well as ancient cycads. The reserve is also home to more than 50 mammal species, 300 bird species and numerous reptiles and amphibians. A state-of-the-art World Heritage Site Interpretive Centre overlooking the Cambria Valley showcases the diversity and natural and cultural history of the Baviaanskloof region.

The Garden of Eden is a walking route set in the lush, green Knysna indigenous forest. The trail is easily marked on the side of the N2. The route is a short board walk through the forest in a circular shape. The major attraction is the forest itself; absolutely beautiful yellow wood trees, thick green foliage and streams. The garden itself comprises smaller trails, so it's up to you if you wish to do the short walking trail, or meander off to explore further. There is also a 800 m board walk suitable for wheelchairs. Distance: 1 km, level throughout. Fee: R10 per person.
