Climbing 1000 metres in 12 kilometres, the Swartberg Pass is one of the steepest passes in South Africa. Running between Prince Albert in the north and Oudtshoorn in the south, the route offers spectacular views over the Little and Great Karoo.The road is not tarred and can be tricky in wet weather but you certainly don’t need a big 4x4 for the pass.Along with striking warped and twisted rock formations and interesting plant life, you will see some amazing drystone work supporting the picturesque hairpin bends. Master pass engineer Thomas Baines and his team of convict labourers took five years to build it in the late 1800s. Today it is a National Monument and largely unchanged.If you really fancy a challenge you could crank you way on the Swartberg Pass Half Marathon. The race route heads out of Prince Albert and into the Swartberg Pass, with sheer rock on both sides.

Muizenberg Beach has all the usual facilities, like showers, surf shos & schools, a couple of nice restaurants and coffee shops on the beachfront and close by. There is a useful walkway from Muizenberg to St James, just on the seaward side of the railway line.

Grootwater 4x4 Trail comprises a variety of short routes totalling 23 km. The trail is located on the banks of the Poer-se-Loop River in the Waterberg. If you tackle all the trails, you should complete them in about 4 hours. The various trails offer different challenges from rocky terrain to some mud during the rainy season. The grading for these trails varies from 1 to 5. A low range vehicle with high clearance is required. The best about the Grootwater Trail is that you can break from your adventures and have a quick braai – in the designated area. An entrance fee is charged. Please call for further information.

The East London Coast Nature Reserve merges ten coastal reserves and two inland state forests. These protected areas are set between the Great Kei River in the north-east and the Tylomnqa River in the south-west. It’s an awesome spot to spend a family holiday or just enjoy chilling on the stunning beaches. Active types will find that there’s so much to do along this lovely coast. Multi-day hikes, nature walks, horse trails and fishing tend to be the most popular activities. From north-east to south-west the parks include Cape Morgan, Double Mouth, Cape Henderson, Chintsa West, Kwelera, Nahoon, Cove Rock or Gulu, Kidd's Beach, Kayser's Beach and Chalumna. These reserves occupy 57% of the 250-kilometre coastline between between the two rivers. Umtiza Forest and Fort Pato Forest are situated inland on the northern banks of the Buffalo River 14 kilometres and 25 kilometres north of East London.

A cairn amoungst the fynbos marks the route to the beach from Olifantsbos. The other option is to hike part of the Sirkelsvlei Walk. This section has great views, is good for spotting birds and links up with the Shipwreck Trail. One of the most easily accessible and extensive wrecks is the Thomas T Tucker. It looks a bit like a scrapyard and provides a roosting spot for numerous seabirds to bask in the sun. Thomas T Tucker wreck ran aground in 1942 on her maiden voyage carrying war cargo from the USA. Another wreck is the Nolloth that ran aground in 1965. The cargo was reputed to have been a large quantity of liquor! Direct Route: 1.5 hours (along seashore and return) Circular Route: 2.5 hours (trail turns inland 1.5 km south of T.T. Tucker) Duration: 4 hours (Direct) to 6 hours (Circular) Difficulty: Easy
