Nature Reserves
in
Gaborone (22.8 km from Madikwe Game Reserve) Home to a variety of mammals including the endangered white rhino, Mokolodi Nature Reserve is also one of two wild animal orphanages in Botswana. Mokolodi, through its White Rhino relocation programme, led the re-introduction of White Rhino in the Okavango area. Following this, more white rhino have since been relocated in that area.This reserve is actually a unique project involving education, conservation, tourism and rural community interaction all in one. It has Botswana's only Wild Cheetah Transit Station for the relocation of "problem" cheetahs brought in by ranchers, and four young, orphaned African elephants who are being raised as a joint venture with the Serendib Elephant Orphanage.Situated just 14km south of Gaborone on the Lobatse Road, Mokolodi Nature Reserve is very easy to find. Along with the wildlife activities, Mokolodi also houses a reptile park, animal sanctuary, wildlife rehabilitation centre, permaculture garden, crocodile pond, elephant baths, restaurant and curio shop. Four By Four Trails
in
Zeerust (78.3 km from Madikwe Game Reserve) Doornrivier 4x4 Trails is located only 12 km from Zeerust. There are many trails to choose from to test your skills and there are two scenic trails with natural obstacles. This is mainly a mountainous landscape with rock obstacles, ascents, descents and cross axles. It is advised to be extra careful during the rainy seasons. The self-drive trails vary from 3 to 70 km and takes about 3 to 6 hours to complete. The grading varies from 3 to 6. 4x2 vehicles with diff lock and 4x4 vehicles without low range are permitted. High clearance is required. Quad bikes are allowed.
Four By Four Trails
in
Swartruggens (86.3 km from Madikwe Game Reserve) Karee Krans 4x4 Trail is conveniently located two hours from Johannesburg and 42 km from Rustenburg, just outside Madikwe. The three trails total 12 km and take anything from four hours to complete. Route A is 5.3 km long and the trickiest of the lot, so take it slow. The difficulty grading is between 2 and 3 and high clearance, low range vehicles are required. These are self-drive trails. Please call for further information.
Nature Reserves

Dwaalboom (87.7 km from Madikwe Game Reserve) Lying on the border of the North West Province, Atherstone Nature Reserve offers an exciting game viewing experience.
Black rhino and elephant are the biggest highlight for many visitors to this 23 500-hectare wilderness.
Characterised by extensive savannah plains with bushveld and Kalahari grasslands eco-systems, Atherstone supports a great diversity of wildlife and birds. Besides antelope, zebra and giraffe, buffalo and rare sable can also be seen.
Feathered friends to get twitchers ticking off boxes are the large number of grassland birds including the Kori bustard and secretary bird.
Hiking Trail

Vrede (97.5 km from Madikwe Game Reserve) This is a two-day circular hike that comprises a 14 km stretch and an 8 km stretch respectively. The trail is rated as easy and there are overnight facilities available. The overnight facilities accommodates 20 guests.
