Pomene Nature Reserve

Pomene Nature Reserve

Nature Reserves in Pomene Bay
Pomene Nature Reserve is a tiny marine reserve incorporating a narrow sandy peninsula, beautiful lagoon and mangrove estuary. The remote location and small local population has kept Pomene Bay’s environment pristine. Here the resorts and locals are working together on environmental initiatives. When visiting Pomene, please support the local community in this endeavour. If you come here to fish, please take only what is needed for the pot and leave nothing but footprints.

Pomene Hotel Ruins

Pomene Hotel Ruins

Popular Attractions in Pomene Bay
Visit the ruins of the vibrant and once-famous Pomene Hotel. You can almost feel the vibes from past holidaymakers, although the area subsequently became a Renamo stronghold during the 20-year civil war. Built in 1964, the hotel had impressive views of Ponta da Barra Falsa and Pomene Bay. Stroll around the abandoned buildings, remnants of Mozambique’s colonial past – you might discover an interesting relic. In 1992, the mounting of a thousand-pound Marlin was found in one piece.

Tofo Beach

Tofo Beach

Beaches in Praia do Tofo
Tofo Beach is an amazing, family-friendly beach surrounded with a number of bars, restaurants, and the Tofo Hotel (try the chicken burgers, and the Mad Man cocktail). To get there, you go to Tofo market which is adjacent to the beautiful wide beach. It is safe for swimming and there are always a couple of people catching waves. There's plenty of space for a game of footy, or volleyball. Boats launch and beach from the left-hand side, so stick to the right side of the beach. You can walk a little way down the beach to Fatima's backpackers and the legendary Dino's beach bar. Alternatively you can walk around the point and down to Tofinho.

Tofo and Tofinho Beaches

Tofo and Tofinho Beaches

Beaches in Tofinho
Tofo is a small coastal town with a lovely beach that offers safe swimming, good reefs for fishing and snorkeling, beach bars and dive schools. The Scuba diving sites are amazing. Tofinho, less than 1 km south, is situated on a more exposed and rocky headland, producing some excellent surfing conditions. Tofinho Point is also a favourite spot for fishermen when a high tide covers the shelf, allowing casting for kingfish into the deep waters beyond. A spectacular blowhole near the tip of the Point gives a raw display of power when there is a large swell running. Tofinho is also the site of the Frelimo Monument to Fallen Heroes, close to where unfortunate victims of the former regime were thrown into a sea cave, to be drowned by the rising tide.
