Kasane The Caracal Biodiversity Centre is an NGO promoting and developing conservation and research programs. Their Environmental Education Centre allows tourists and community members to get an up close encounter with snakes, other reptiles, birdlife, small mammals and insects. The main focus is to promote sustainable wildlife utilization, wildlife conflict resolution, and endangered species management. This includes rescue of injured wildlife, ecosystem health and natural resource management, training of government staff, communities and school children.

Gaborone Home to a variety of mammals including the endangered white rhino, Mokolodi Nature Reserve is also one of two wild animal orphanages in Botswana. Mokolodi, through its White Rhino relocation programme, led the re-introduction of White Rhino in the Okavango area. Following this, more white rhino have since been relocated in that area.This reserve is actually a unique project involving education, conservation, tourism and rural community interaction all in one. It has Botswana's only Wild Cheetah Transit Station for the relocation of "problem" cheetahs brought in by ranchers, and four young, orphaned African elephants who are being raised as a joint venture with the Serendib Elephant Orphanage.Situated just 14km south of Gaborone on the Lobatse Road, Mokolodi Nature Reserve is very easy to find. Along with the wildlife activities, Mokolodi also houses a reptile park, animal sanctuary, wildlife rehabilitation centre, permaculture garden, crocodile pond, elephant baths, restaurant and curio shop. Nata The Nata Bird Sanctuary is a community managed reserve on the Sowa pan where bird life and wildlife is protected.
The Sowa pan forms a part of the Makgadikgadi Pans. You will experience the magnificent vast open space of the salt pans driving towards the look out point and with luck you will find the flamingos who come to breed in the winter. It is one of the greatest breeding sites for lesser and greater flamingos in the world. There are more than 150 other bird species to be found such as pelicans, stilts, korhaans, bustards and spoonbills.
Other wildlife to be seen includes springbok, ostriches, jackal, oryx, hartebeest, wildebeast and kudu. Don't drive past the sanctuary when on your way to Maun or Kasane; it's a perfect lunch stopover.
Nata Sanctuary is located 20 km south of Nata and is open from 7:00 till 19:00 daily.

Four By Four Trails

Zeerust (91.2 km from Botswana) Doornrivier 4x4 Trails is located only 12 km from Zeerust. There are many trails to choose from to test your skills and there are two scenic trails with natural obstacles. This is mainly a mountainous landscape with rock obstacles, ascents, descents and cross axles. It is advised to be extra careful during the rainy seasons. The self-drive trails vary from 3 to 70 km and takes about 3 to 6 hours to complete. The grading varies from 3 to 6. 4x2 vehicles with diff lock and 4x4 vehicles without low range are permitted. High clearance is required. Quad bikes are allowed.

Dwaalboom (97 km from Botswana) Lying on the border of the North West Province, Atherstone Nature Reserve offers an exciting game viewing experience.
Black rhino and elephant are the biggest highlight for many visitors to this 23 500-hectare wilderness.
Characterised by extensive savannah plains with bushveld and Kalahari grasslands eco-systems, Atherstone supports a great diversity of wildlife and birds. Besides antelope, zebra and giraffe, buffalo and rare sable can also be seen.
Feathered friends to get twitchers ticking off boxes are the large number of grassland birds including the Kori bustard and secretary bird.
