Augrabies Falls National Park When the mighty Orange River is in full flood the sound of water thundering down the 56-metre high Augrabies Waterfall is deafening. It’s an awesome experience at any time of year.
Called Aukoerebis(place of great noise) by the Khoi San people, the powerful flow of water gushing out from the vast granite abyss of the Orange River Gorge. Besides the falls, great sites to visit are Moon Rock, Ararat and Echo Corner.
Home to a diversity of species, the Augrabies National Park and its spectacular granite gorge offers great birding, some small game, reptiles, springbok, gemsbok and giraffe and a fun hiking trail.
Hiking Trail
in
Augrabies Falls National Park The self-guided Dassie Interpretive Trail starts at the Augrabies National Park Rest Camp and follows the gorge to Arrow Point, an amazing viewpoint over the lower gorge and Twin Falls. From here, the circular route leads to the impressive geological features of Potholes, Swartrante and Moon Rock before reaching the starting point.
The trail is roughly 5 km requires a certain level of fitness as it involves scrambling over slippery rocks. Ensue that you wear appropriate footwear and carry water and sunscreen. Birds and animals frequently seen include African darter, Cape clawless otter, water monitor, giant kingfisher; dassie, klipspringer, springbok and other antelope.

The launch site is at Augrabies, 10 km from the Augrabies Falls.
Hiking Trail
in
Augrabies (13.6 km from Augrabies Falls National Park) A moderate to difficult hiking route, the Klipspringer Trail takes you on a 3 day hike through the Augrabies Falls National Park.
Each day is roughly 13 km long, and will take about 6½ hours to complete. The trail starts at a rest camp that must be booked previously. Hikers will relish the incredible views and the natural beauty of the area.
Overnight accommodation is rustic, comprising bunk beds, mattresses and flush toilets. Braai facilities and wood are supplied.
The trail is semi-arid, rugged and demands a fair degree of fitness.
Note that the trail is closed from the 15 October to the 31st March every year, due to the extreme heat in the area.

This could also appeal to the family on holiday that wants some fun exercise. At Khamkirri we have sven kilometers of mountain bike trails on the premises.
For the dedicated mountain biker there is a wide range of paths to suit the level of challenge you require. We can recommend routes for you to follow for full or half day trips. This allows you to use Khamkirri as you base camp and head out on your own!

Khamkirri offers 3 km of Orange River front for fly fishing or bait fishing. Try your luck at catching large- or small-mouthed yellowfish, barbell lurk, silvers, mudfish, carp or bream. There is a strict catch-and-release policy for yellowfish. Raft can be hired on premises.

Augrabies (13.8 km from Augrabies Falls National Park) Khamkirri River Rafting is set along the banks of the Orange River in the Northern Cape, close to Augrabies. Khamkarri offers four river-rafting experiences - full-day trips, half-day trips, nature paddles and rafting with a one-night camp along the river. All trips are headed by experienced and qualified guides.
The full-day trip heads out on a 17 km trip with a lunch break. The half-day trips can be tackled either in the morning or afternoon and is 9 km long. Children from the age of five are permitted. The nature paddles are for the less adventurous and is about 3 km long. The overnight rafting experience is 15 km and ends with a camp along the bank of the Orange River.

Augrabies (15.6 km from Augrabies Falls National Park) Riemvasmaak is found between the Orange and the dry Molopo Rivers. It is about 57 km from Kakamas and 170 km from the Nakop border post with Namibia. The area is 75 000 ha of sheer mountain desert and wilderness. The landscape was formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago.
Visitors can unwind in the hot springs with 80 m granite cliffs surrounding them. Two swimming pools are built at the hot springs, of which one has been shaped on a conversation pit.
Four By Four Trails
in
Augrabies (17.7 km from Augrabies Falls National Park) Khamkirri Nature Reserve 4x4 Trail is in the Northern Cape, close to Augrabies. The trail heads over semi-desert terrain with sand and rocky outcrops. This area is great for birdwatching and spotting some wildlife.
The difficulty grading ranges from 2 to 4 and low range, high clearance vehicles are required. The trail is from 7 km to 60 km long and takes anything from 2 hours to 6 hours to complete. An overnight at Khamkirri is recommended!

Four By Four Trails
in
Kakamas (33.3 km from Augrabies Falls National Park) Deberas Adventures is about 70 km from Kakamas in the Northern Cape. Deberas Farm borders the Augrabies Falls National Park and is an eco-friendly farm. The trail of 25 km is part of existing farm routes. The trail covers different terrain, namely rocky landscapes with steep climbs, dry riverbeds and sandy tracks. The trail takes approximately 4 to 6 hours to complete and has a grading of 3. This is a one-way track with no turnaround points. A compressor is recommended and there is an entry fee per vehicle. Please contact for further information.
Mountain Biking Trails
in
Kakamas (38.3 km from Augrabies Falls National Park) Starting off at Vergelen Guesthouse, this challenging mountain bike trail will take you along the old water tunnels to the foot of the Swartbooisberg.
The route takes a very steep 3 km uphill climb with some technical sections, including loose rocks and a gradient change near the top. At the summit you can enjoy the view over the vineyards. Bikers take the same route back to the guest house.
Four By Four Trails

Pofadder (90.9 km from Augrabies Falls National Park) Dinky’s Dunes 4x4 offers two 25 km 4x4 trails, 30 km from Pofadder. The trails each take about 2 to 5 hours to complete. The red sand trails have some rocky outcrops and grassy plains. The trails are a must during the blooming season with flowers of every colour popping out to greet the explorers. The grading is unknown so please call beforehand.
