Hiking Trail
in
Smithfield (56.8 km from Aliwal North) The old abattoir walking trail starts from Pula House and follows a gentle route for the casual hiker.
Walk across the river and see the (now defunct) old abattoir. Take a leisurely stroll along the river through some beautiful surroundings to the golf course - the 3rd oldest course in the Free State.
It is a round trip of about 7 kilometres and is perfect for individuals who don't want to take the strain of a mountain hike. You may even discover some old Bushman paintings along the way.
Hiking Trail

Zastron (60.3 km from Aliwal North) This walking trail is located near Zastron in the Free State and offers a variety of day routes. An old farmhouse can be utilized as base camp. Beautiful views of the Maluti's and the Witteberge can be enjoyed.
The trail can take one or two days and is quite easy to do. The distance is 10 km and a maximum of 30 people per group are allowed.
Four By Four Trails
in
Molteno (85.1 km from Aliwal North) The Bamboeshoek 4x4 Trail is just outside Molteno, set next to and on top Nuveld Mountain Range. The trail has great views and challenges such as gorges and cliffs. A 4x4 or 2x4 vehicle is required with low range and high clearance. The route is 19 km long and takes about 3 hours to complete. The grading is between 2 and 4. The Bamboeshoek 4x4 Trail can be accessed all year round.

Molteno (86.9 km from Aliwal North) If you enjoy dunking a rusk in your morning cup of coffee, phone ahead and make arrangements to visit the Ouma Rusk factory outside Molteno. It’s situated on Friedenheim Farm, and the famous business has put Molteno on the map. Once out of town, just follow the aroma of condensed milk, aniseed, buttermilk and cinnamon.
Hiking Trail

Sterkstroom (94.1 km from Aliwal North) This easy walk is located in a 271 ha reserve and vsitors may be spoilt with sightings of springbuck, blesbok, zebra, impala, gemsbok, kudu, hartebeest, wildebeest, rhebok and ostrich. Easy walking trails have been laid out.
Take the Dordrecht road from Sterkstroom and turn right just before you get to the railway line. The gate is 3 km along a good gravel road.
There is a rest camp with chalets, electric lighting and stoves, and sites for 20 caravans and tents.
This is a one-day, circular walk.
