The tranquil, lazy, relaxing seaside of Southport now has another feather in its cap. It boasts the newest Blue Flag Beach in KZN! This international qualification which was awarded in October 2012 is a tremendous achievement, as the beach is judged on its cleanliness and facilities.
The beach is a beautiful sandy beach with enough rocks for the kids to explore, and to make the scenery interesting, and shark nets to help keep it safe. There are braai facilities set under the fascinating shaped milkwood trees on the grassy bank above the beach. Where better to spend your time relaxing in the knowledge that your car will be kept safe under the watchful eyes of a car guard – but don’t forget to keep an eye out for whales and dolphins who frequently visit this coast. For those who enjoy a dip in the sea, lifeguards are housed in a building above the immaculate ablution facilities, which also have outside showers for you to wash the sand and salt off – or your kiddies can enjoy splashing and having fun in the tidal pool.
On weekends and school holidays there is often entertainment at the beach from local fetes and art exhibitions to Christmas Holiday beach activities or a visit from the Harley Davidson Bike Week.
A few meters away Captain’s Anchor restaurant and pub offers delicious meals in a relaxed atmosphere overlooking the sea, or for other fine dining in the same vicinity you can visit Castaways Italian Restaurant or sample the home cooked fare at the Tea House in the Southport Shopping Centre which also has a nursery, post office, petrol station, fascinating second hand shop, and grocery store amongst others.
There’s even a nature reserve in Southport, the Bendigo Nature Reserve, a tranquil secluded coastal forest area with a number of walking trails. When you stroll in the reserve you may be lucky enough to encounter some of the small wildlife, birds and butterflies that make it their home.
Fishing and snorkeling spots abound in and near Southport – or you can book a boat trip at Shelly Beach for deep sea angling.
Southport is ideally situated on the R102 a few minutes drive from either Hibberdene or Port Shepstone for larger shops – or a little further are the shopping malls at Shelly Beach, and super holiday entertainment from Hibberdene to Port Edward and inland to the Oribi Gorge.
For the sports enthusiast there are 10 top class golf courses within a 40 minute drive, the closest being at Port Shepstone Country Club where there are tennis and badminton courts and other sports facilities open to the holidaymaker, as well as bowls at the Southport Bowling Club.
But to really make the most of your time in Southport, sit back relax and enjoy.

Nestled amongst beuatifull rocks and tidal pools, this Blue Flag Status beach is certainly one of the most intimate and carefully kept beaches on the sunny South Coast of KZN. With its uncommercialized appearance, clean waters, shark nets and safe swimming bay, it rests amongst shady trees and watching lifeguards to offer bathers and visitors the peace of mind expected while beeing on a relaxing holiday or daily visit for the local community. The town proudly accommodates hundreds of holiday makers who seeks tranquility and safety, yet beeing only 9 km from Port Shepstone and other coastal towns worth visiting such as Shelly Beach, Margate, The Wild Coast Sun & Casino and the increible Oribi Gorge on the Oribi Flats and all it has to offer.
