Description

Robertson is known as the small town with a big heart. Located in the shadow of the majestic Langeberg mountains with the Breede River as its life blood, Robertson is the western gateway to The Heart of Route 62, only 1 and a half hours leisurely drive from Cape Town.

With 150 years of history, Robertson has grown into one of the most attractive Cape Winelands towns. Victorian buildings, jacaranda-lined streets, rose lined vineyards, columns of red and yellow cannas as well as bright bougainvilleas all form the back drop to this delightful town.

The region may be best known for its wines but the variety of attractions, activities, accommodation, and culinary delights on offer - combined with spectacular scenery and the warm hospitality of the people, makes it a superb getaway.

In one of the most beautiful valleys in South Africa, Robertson is surrounded by the Langeberg Mountains and needs to be visited for the peacefulness of its valleys and the beauty of its green vineyards.

Situated along Route 62 (reputedly the longest wine route in the world) in the Cape Winelands, the Robertson Valley Wine Route is officially recognized, and its limestone rich soils and diversity of terroir produce world class wines. Not only are the wines full of character, but so are the winemakers; they love what they do and it shows. Brandy tastings and tours are also possible at the Klipdrift distillery.

Olives are grown and processed locally and Robertson's farm stalls overflow with fresh produce, dried fruit, homemade breads, jams and preserves. Combine olive tasting with some cheese tasting and you'll spoiled for choice. The area is also becoming one of the pioneering areas for organic farm products. Stop off at Affie Plaas Farm Stall for wine at cellar prices and great gifts for the home.

Get outdoors and relax on one of the popular river boat cruises, go on a game drive or explore the hiking trails in the Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve. Wander around the spectacular cactus gardens at the Sheilam Cacti and Succulent Garden or explore the extensive gardens, mazes and the labyrinth at Soekershof Private Maze and Botanical Garden.

Biking, canoeing, river rafting and horse riding are popular activities, while Bird's Paradise is great for the kids with birds from Central America, Africa and Asia, as well as monkeys, crocodiles and a play park.

No matter what time of the year, Robertson offers a superb quality of life. Vineyards and orchards stretch from outlying farmlands into the very heart of the town. Enjoy living with wine ,fruit, horses, colourful characters and clean country air as everyday components of life.

Amazing annual events to look out for are the Robertson Wacky Wine Weekend, Robertson Slow and Robertson Wine-on-the-River.

Without knocking the Stellenbosch and Franschoek's of the world, these aren't everyone's scene - and don't suit everyone's budget. In and around Robertson the farms are equally good, offering a wide variety of restaurants and wine tasting experiences that are perhaps slightly less "fine dining" and more just plain good value. Van Louveren's shredded pork belly pizza can't be beaten! For a family friendly craft beer tasting, try Saggy Stone. We stayed at Orange Grove Farm - quite possibly the best value luxury accommodation we have ever stayed at.

My family and I stayed for a week at Orange Grove Farm, a working wine and olive farm in the heart of the Western Cape's Valley of Wine and Roses. Luxury self-catering accomodation is in the form of whitewashed, thatched-roof cottages with the mountains as their backdrop and the vineyards as their views. The service, accommodation and hospitality were world-class. Activities include guided hikes and mountain biking, while each cottage has a pool and a built-in barbecue.

In the heart of Winter, we were met with THE most wonderful and helpful people. The room was turned down with a bottle of bubbly waiting for us in the room. The service was superb and the people were so friendly that it felt like a home away from home... It was my birthday weekend and the staff planned something uniquely special as a surprise for which I was very very thankful. Overall, the best weekend away by far, EVER... I was sad to leave this beautiful part of the world. Byron

Robertson is the new kid on the block in the Cape Winelands. Its wine festivals are the most popular in the country and that is not only because of the wine itself. Probably even more because of the vibe, the atmosphere, the absolute no-stress-allowed environment of Robertson and the true hospitality of its people. While Robertson is hot on the local market, there is a growing number of international tourists discovering the beauty of this valley. Robertson is just a little off the beaten track as one finds Stellenbosch and Franschhoek on nearly everyone's travel itinerary. With as much reason Robertson should be on there as well, albeit for its unique location between Cape Town and the Garden Route, as starting point of the magnificent Route 62 towards Oudtshoorn and only 1,5 hours drive away from coastal towns as Hermanus or Cape Agulhas. More and more overseas visitors agree that a holiday experience in Robertson is a guarantee for extreme value for money, not only when it comes to wine (free tastings and reasonably priced wines) or golf (moderate fees and no crowds at the Silwerstrand 18 holes), but definitely when it comes to accommodation. Although top rated and quality establishments have settled in Robertson, their overnight rates are still within everybody's reach and very competitive. Consider Robertson a must-go on your next trip to the Cape. You won't regret.

I would rate Robertson a four star. A unique experience to the visitors globally. It is a top tourists destination in the Cape Winelands with its highest wine market, food, shopping, friendliness, promotions and hospitality. It promotes the uniqueness of "ubuntu" a xhosa word which means humanity. It has a stream range of vineyards, stock and vegetable farms surrounded by the range of Langeberg Mountains and a stream of the Brede River across it. This is a beautiful and clean town with bright roses. A number of attractions and activities like the wine and food festivals, the fruit and vegetables harvest time is also very important in this area. Services are economical to the visitors.

Lovely town with very friendly people and good overnight accommodation can be cheaply found at 62 on Main an old house spotlessly clean and well run by Eve.

This was my first time travelling the wine area of Robertson and found myself "gobsmacked" because the landscape is so beautiful. I was fortunate enough visit at the beginning of the fynbos blossoming. There were also white and pink blossoms on the farm trees. Whichever way you looked, there were spectacular views of the mountains, the flowers and a feeling of peace and harmony.

Visit the great Robertson wine cellars which include the acclaimed Graham Beck wines. Enjoy wine tasting and local produce from the agriculturally driven town. Also home to one of South Africa’s favourite brandy's, Klipdrift. Great restaurants and atmosphere. A must-visit for the connoisseur.
