Description

Port Alfred is a vibrant coastal town on the Sunshine Coast between Port Elizabeth and East London. The cheerful climate, endless golden sandy beaches, quaint old harbour and upmarket residential Royal Alfred Marina draw holidaymakers from all over the country.

The Kowie River runs through the town, providing a playground for watersport junkies with great waterskiing, angling and canoeing. Try the two-day Kowie Canoe Trail for a real wilderness adventure.

At the river mouth are some great surf spots. Hard-core surfers head for the barrels rolling off the East Pier. From here the scuba diving charters, deep-sea fishing boats and yachts head out to the distant reefs and deep sea. Experience the unique soft corals and sponges on the reefs or dive 18th Century shipwrecks.

Venture out of town to see the Great Fish Point Lighthouse or go hiking in pristine Eastern Cape Valley Bushveld. There are excellent hiking trails and horse riding along the beach and inland at Three Sisters Horse Trails, Horse Shoe Bend Reserve and the Kap River Nature Reserve.

Beautiful nature, The town is not too big, but have ample eateries Lots of watersport with the Kowie river on your doorstep, not to mention the gorgeous beachfront. This destination still have that "unspoilt" feel, not being over commercialised.

Port Alfred has the most sunshine hours in South Africa, wonderful temperate climate, endless beaches as well as the magnificent Kowie River, which flows into the warm Indian Ocean. It is very popular among water sport enthusiasts for swimming, surfing, boating, water-skiing and scuba diving. The town has a picturesque boat harbour, residential marina and first class golfing and angling. Port Alfred offers many restaurants and select shopping - from modern centres to little shops showcasing the vibrant local art and craft industry. The surrounding countryside has thousands hectares of malaria-free game reserves, many hiking trails and historical and scenic places to visit. The land is wild and beautiful and the scenery spectacular... so get out and explore!

The perfect spot for a relaxing holiday, no matter what time of year! Port Alfred has the charm of a true Eastern Cape coastal town, with friendly people and endless beaches. The personal atmosphere and the beautifully sunny days make it a great place for a quiet retreat. The two malls make grocery shopping quick and easy and even gives the ladies the option of browsing through the boutiques. The river is a real attraction in the town, offering plenty of activities for the active and the not-so-active. With river cruises, skiing, canoeing, paddling and river-side dining, it is definitely the place to be. The beach is beautiful all year round, perfect for walks in the sunny winter days and lovely for swimming and tanning in the summer. Port Alfred is close to Port Elizabeth, East London, Grahamstown and Bathurst for those looking for an excursion.

Port Alfred - a small town in a beautiful setting. We have the Kowie River, the Indian Ocean with endless unspoilt beaches, a small boat harbour and the marina. You can indulge in most of your favourite outdoor pastimes from hiking to relaxing on the beach. For those with an interest in history, archaeology, geology and ornithology - amongst the other -ologies - there's something for you as well! Yes, we have some pot-holes, but Port Alfred is a town where you have access to everything you need to enjoy your holiday, and to live, amidst nature, wildlife and rural peace, with beaches and the sea at hand. What more could one want?

Port Alfred is a gorgeous little town that has a little of everything to capture one's heart. Set in an area rich with settler history (just tour bathurst and the many quaint churches around us and you will know what I mean!). Port Alfred itself is a beautiful town nestled between the East and West bank of the Kowie River, a coastal town that offers great adventures like scuba diving, sea fishing, river activities like boat cruising and waterskiing. Because we are situated in the green Eastern Cape you can also enjoy neighbouring Game Reserves, Great Farm food (Eastern Cape is pineapple, beef, chicory and dairy country!) and lovely horse rides on the beach.

Port Alfred grew on us as our stay evolved. I don't think the town makes enough of itself in terms of beach bars and so on, and the advertising of restaurants.

Port Alfred is a fun little town that offers a lot, especially for action junkies. Pack all your toys before leaving home. There’s great skiing and canoeing on the river, barrels that roll off the East Pier for the competent surfer, interesting reefs to dive, a good golf course and a marina to cast off from. The beaches are stunning and the locals don’t bite but are a very social bunch, especially in the pubs.

Port Alfred is a peaceful place. Clean, and places are in close proximity to each other. One thing that we didn't like about Port Alfred was the roads. Not well maintained at all, especially for my partner's car that has a lowered suspension. Other than that, very friendly people and peaceful.
