Montagu

We enjoyed Montagu, lots of places to go to. Very close to other towns and the Wine route. Lovely charm and friendly people. Loved the mountains and the beautiful scenery around Montagu.

This beautiful little town surprises us every time we drive through it. We visit it almost every year for the Wine on the River festival in October, and are amazed at the beauty of the mountains, the quaint historic houses, the great selection of fabulous restaurants, and the friendly people. Although it is a small town, it definitely does not lack in things to do!

I love Montagu, it is a gorgeous little town, very remote and lovely to " get away" too, with plenty of wine routing and outdoor adventures to keep you busy. We have had a lovely stay at various guesthouses, but wouldnt recommend Montagu Springs. That particular resort was of poor standard, but Montagu is always a nice weekend away!

Montagu is a charming, historic village nestled between two mountain ranges at the beginning of the KleinKaroo, halfway between Cape Town and the Garden Route and is the heart of the legendary Route 62. With crystal clear air, beautiful surroundings, a superb climate it is an ideal destination for a holiday of any length. The village was named after John Montagu, a Colonial Secretary of the Cape, who unocked the hinterland by blasting the "hole in the wall". Montagu is a hiking and rock climbing paradise: Bloupunt Trail 15,6 km, Cogmanskloof Trail 12,1 km, Baadkloof Trail 2,4 km, and Lovers Walk, 500 m, are waiting for you. One of the 10 sports climbing hot spots in the world you will find in and around Montagu. From an easy 13/4+ up to 35/8+ rated "Mazawatte" is all arranged for you by mother nature. Fauna: Along the trail many species of bird life, including the black eagle, can be spotted and one also encounters many dassies and klipspringers, after which the overnight cabin is named. The reserve is also home to many baboon, duiker, rhebuck, otter, caracal and leopard. Flora: A very large selection of wild flowers can be seen at all times of the year due to perenial streams flowing through the area - more so along the Bloupunt route than on the drier Cogmanskloof trail. Here, within a few meters of water-loving plants beside the gurgling streams, a large variety of proteas, ericas, aloes, redhot pokers, lillies, watsonias, gladioli, orchids and many others can be found. Various species of indigenous trees will be encountered and some of these have been identified by means of name plates. Weather: The Langeberg mountain range is generally a winter rainfall area and hot and dry in summer. However let this not deter you from visiting us all year round, some of the best hikes are made in the spring and autumn, and even winter offers mostly sunny and clear days when Cape Town is battered by the winter rains.

Montagu has a lot to boast about - one can wax lyrical about the well preserved historical value (particularly the architecture) of this quaint village, the 50+ excellent wine estates in the Langeberg region surrounding Montagu, the MANY Outdoor Activities unique to Montagu, the Hot Springs, the numerous excellent Restaurants and Accommodation Establishments, the unpolluted clear atmosphere, the spectacular mountains that cradle the town....but, above all, it is the friendliness and warm hospitality of the people that sets Montagu apart from the rest.

Montagu, which is situated on South Africa’s famous Route 62 – reputedly the longest wine route in the world – has to be the gem of this area! A beautifully maintained Victorian town, nestled in a fertile valley and surrounded by stunning mountains. There is something for everyone in Montagu. Discover the past of this small town, by exploring its history on the ‘Historical Walk’. Or wander through the arts and crafts shops, both here and in the surrounding towns. Then, for the outdoor lovers, follow the Keisie River Bank as you stroll along Lover’s Walk. For the more adventurous, this then leads you to many trails and hiking areas, of varying lengths and intensity, through beautiful valleys in the mountain ranges. The famous Avalon Springs have been known for their healing powers for the past 200 years. Montagu is well known for its fruit and nuts and one should not miss out in a shopping trip to the Montagu Dried Fruit and Nut Shop! Montagu is also surrounded by a world renowned wine farms in the Breede Valley, where wine tasting is a treat not to be missed. Other outdoor activities include a Tractor ride up the Langeberg Mountains, with exceptional views over the surrounding valleys or a boat ride on the Breede River, cruising while you eat your picnic lunch from the Deli. If you are looking for somewhere special, Montagu is just not to be missed!

Montagu, is a scenic 2-hour drive from Cape Town, surrounded by the Langeberg Mountains and is the gateway to the Klein Karoo on Route 62, reputedly the longest wine route in the world. It’s a year-round destination. Here you will find a community of smiles and sunshine, people who ask how you are - and wait for the answer, people who quickly progress from acquaintances to friends. Summers are hot and winters somewhat chilly during the nights, but the changing scenery, and sun shine makes an autumn-winter visit worthwhile. Scenic walks, nature trails and mountain hikes are all the rage in this scenically splendid town and surrounds.

Really lovely, not over commercialized. Very friendly town.

Montagu is a beautiful place. We enjoyed it there.

Montague is a lovely little town. I preferred Montague to Franschhoek, it is not so commercialized. There are many restaurants and bars to choose from, a good array of shops for self-catering clients, and there are lots of things to do in Montague.

Beautiful little place with lots of history.

Very peaceful little town. Not very much to see there for people who are looking for a busy nightlife but a nice place to relax, and ideal for a short stay on a tour between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn.

Clean and safe. No traffic hassles, when we were there anyway. Historic buildings beautifully maintained. Mountain views out of this world.

Montagu is a place to return to again and again. There's a real quaintness and rustic charm about the town. On Saturday mornings one can go to the farmer's market - great happening, with the freshest of food available for sale (it's right next to the NG Church, under some lovely trees). I recommend the tractor ride at Protea Farm, a visit to the montagu shop for dried fruit and wasabi peanuts, a drive to Robertson for the best chicken pie in SOuth Africa at Affie Plaas Farmstall, Viljoensdrift wine farm and a boat ride on the Breede River. You can pack yourself a picnic basket from the deli and enjoy it with some bubbly on your boat ride.

A pretty and well laid out town, full of history and the greatest tractor ride in the country.

The mountains and scenery are very nice and the people are friendly. It is the perfect place for a quiet getaway.

I decided to go to Montagu as it looked halfway between our two main destinations. What a perfect little town. It was so pretty with quaint Victorian or older houses, green-roofed with ornate iron balconies. It has a beautiful Dutch reform church on the main street. The hot springs/outdoor pools were great for our 11 and 13 year old after being in the car for quite a long journey. The scenery on the way into town was spectacular. It has friendly and helpful shops and hotels and we felt quite safe and weren't worried about security.

After we found the right place to stay and being well informed about Montagu, there was so much to see. It is definitely a mystic little town.

One of the most beautiful places I've ever visited. The people are the friendliest I've ever encountered. I would like to live there.
