Untidy,false advertising,staff unfriendly

We booked a room for 8, when we arrived there, they gave us a small room with no wardrobe. When we asked for a bigger room, they told us the rooms were fully booked and its not their problem we booked a dorm room (what kind of an answer is that). The bedroom linen is so old that it itches on the body, the walls need major painting. The attitude we got from the receptionist (Olivia) stinks. There is no full disclosure from the internet. (I LOOKED AT THE PICTURES TODAY AGAIN AND I CAN'T FIND THE ROOM WE WERE BOOKED ON OVER THE WEEKEND, PLEASE UPDATE) I don't recommend anyone to go there unless you have a tyre punch or desperate for a room to crash in.
1. You booked our Meiringspoort dorm which is a standard dorm that sleeps 8 guests and this is the room you were allocated. This dorm has 8 wire lockers for storing small items. Locks are available at reception. It also has a open cupboard with hanging space in case anything needs to be hung up by a guest. It also has a double door upright fridge (a facility not usually offered in dorms). The description of this room on SafariNow website is: ‘This dormitory sleeps 8 guests in bunk beds. Own bathroom with two showers, toilet and washbasin.’ I am not sure how this constitutes false advertising? 2. We are a busy backpackers and to date have not had any complaints about the bedding. I will certainly investigate this comment regarding the bedding being scratchy. Pity that you did not bring it to the attention of the person on duty at the time and we would have changed it. My staff are usually accommodating to guests needs. 3. With regard to the walls, you are quite correct. However, you may have noticed that it was dried out water damage and not just in need of a coat of paint. You may also have noticed in the bathroom next door that the one shower had 2 tiles chopped out and that some of the water pipes were exposed. This is because we had a water leak which caused the damage to the wall and is in the process of being repaired. Once we are certain that the leak has stopped we will re-plaster that section in the bathroom and once the wall is completely dry we will repaint it – probably some time during this week when we are finished refurbishing the dorm next door to the Meiringspoort dorm (you may have noticed my workers busy there on Saturday). 4. With regards to Olivia’s attitude, I will deal with this below when I give you feedback on what my staff had to report on your and your group. Report back from my staff 1. All 3 staff members who dealt with you at the time of your arrival and during your stay said that you had a bad, condescending attitude from the time you arrived, making sarcastic and insulting remarks about the braai and bar facilities (which overseas and other SA tourists are more than happy about). You were sarcastic and derogatory and had no idea what a dorm actually is. Olivia commented to you that the dorm is what you booked, which you denied. It is clearly stated in your booking that it was the Meiringspoort dorm booked and this dorm is in fact our cheapest accommodation and is basic. Our other, more expensive dorms are of a higher standard. We are a 3 star graded backpacker and comply in all aspects with the grading criteria which is renewed annually and was renewed in October 2013. 2. You and your group had absolutely no regard for the other 18 guests that were staying with us, were loud, played your music loudly – even at 5am in the morning and were a disturbance to other guests. Olivia on a number of occasions asked you to be quiet which was disregarded. She should actually at this stage have asked you to leave. I have addressed this oversight with her and she will do this in future with other unruly groups. 3. Your group could not control their alcohol intake and vomited all over the bathroom, in the washbasin and even clogged up the basin so badly that we had to get a plumber to unblock it. 4. You were advised on arrival and again on the day of departure that our checkout time is 10am. This is because we have to clean and prepare the rooms for guests arriving on the day. You group showed total disregard to this and when at 11am were reminded of the 10am checkout deliberately slowed down the process of vacating the room, put on your music and started dancing in the courtyard. Once again showing no consideration for others at the backpacker. I am not sure if you have ever stayed at a backpackers. Your behaviour and attitude shows that you probably have not. Backpackers generally have communal areas which the guests share – lounge, bar, braai facilities, kitchen etc. In some cases they share rooms (ie dorm – shared sleeping quarters) and in others they book private room that do not require sharing (twin, double rooms). They also have consideration for other guests especially late at night with regard to noise levels. Your group showed no concern for others, booked a dorm and as said previously, our basic dorm ie no frills. If you do not like this sort of accommodation, don’t book to stay at a backpacker. In summary you and your group will not be welcome back at Amakaya Backpackers and should have been thrown out after the first night. You can be glad that the staff did not call me at the time because I would most certainly have asked you to leave. Regards Dave Swart Amakaya Backpackers & Self-catering Plettenberg Bay

Amakaya is clean and comfortable with a reasonable supply of equipment in the kitchen. There was some noise from the road and voices did channel up the stairs, but no great problem. It is close to the town centre and beaches.
A wonderful place!
