Rugged kloofs, high mountains and dramatic landscapes that sweep inland from the Orange River, divulge the fact that you are now in the vast mountain desert that is the Richtersveld National Park, an area managed jointly by the local Nama people and the South African National Parks. This is a harsh and unpredictable land where water is scarce and life-sustaining moisture comes in the form of early morning fog, called ‘Ihuries’ or ‘malmokkies’ by the local people, which rolls in from the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean, sustaining a remarkable range of small reptiles, birds and mammals. A staggering assortment of plant life, some species occurring nowhere else, is to be found here, with gnarled quiver trees, tall aloes and quaint ‘half-mens’ keeping vigil over this inscrutable landscape.

6 Reviews on Sendelingsdrif Rest Camp Richtersveld Park SANParks

This rest camp is favourably set on the bank of the Orange River. The cottage is spacious and well equipped which made for a comfortable overnight stay. I would use this accommodation again.

10 July 2014

The cottages were not ready on time! Private person from filling station was using the cottage and we were expected to move in without even an apology from the staff or the individual. Bedsheets appeared have been used. Come on SANParks, if you want to keep going, you will have to improve. No discount given for Pensioners when we booked! We did not argue the point, but we received the discount at Augrabies.

The park itself was excellent to travel in, I really think the staff working there needs some training. We did not get what we expected. There was no forks in the chalet, the booking was not found and and and. No thanks, I will not stay over there again. Although the river front and the nature were beautiful.

We crossed over from Namibia on the ferry and spent two nights in the park before heading south via Alexander Bay. Reception was friendly and we received good advice on moving around the park. The cottages were clean and air conditioning had been kept on for our arrival - although beds had not been made by mid afternoon. Good facilities for self catering and the 'old mining' style fits the setting well. Baboons, monkeys, fish eagles and other bird life around the camp put you close to nature with the Orange river on your doorstep. A drive to De Hoop was a perfect day trip for lunch - although signs are absent at times. 4x4 definitely needed. Beautiful and remote.

03 January 2014

Daar was geen warm water - laataand het ons die "geyser" aangeskakel met 'n gevolglike kortsluiting en die hele chalet sonder krag. Daar was niemand om te help - ook geen kontaknommers by kantore. My man is 'n diabeet en die insulin kon nie koud gehou word nie. Ons moes vroeg ry, sonder ligte om te pak, geen kerse in die chalet. Ons was baie teleurgesteld - so uitgesien na 'n salige aand langs die rivier!
