  • The Antbear Guest House is situated in the foothills of the KwaZulu Natal Drakensberg in South Africa. This guesthouse is an ideal place to base yourself while you discover the Drakensberg region of KwaZulu Natal South Africa. We invite you to spend time here and share some of our dream. We like to think that the Antbear is a place for feeding your soul and rekindling your spirit. Built in the 1940’s the quaint and charming cottage puts its arms around you and reminds you that there are things more important than everyday life. © Antbear Guest House
  • So if your looking for a place where art, beauty and time away are important then Antbear Guesthouse is worth a second look. © Antbear Guest House
  • This cottage is a bit off the beaten track and is more of an insider tip than just another bed and breakfast. We cater for small intimate groups and never have more than 10 guests at a time. It’s a laid back, lovingly cared for kind of place where you feel a sense of happiness and peace. Honeymoon stays turn into anniversary commemorations just as guests become friends. Even foreign tourists return for a second and third taste © Antbear Guest House
  • Plan for slow and decadent dinners by candlelight prepared by your hosts Andrew and Conny. Sometimes it’s a Moroccan spread including a genuine Moroccan tagine prepared on wood coals or maybe it’s a surprise of just how delightful Chinese food can be. Breakfast is served with freshly baked bread and scones and often it becomes a 2 hour affair © Antbear Guest House
  • The Drakensberg mountain range stretches the entire length of KwaZulu-Natal's western boundary. Hundreds of kilometers of unspoiled escarpment await the tourist who seeks to get away from it all.

The Natal Drakensberg is one of South Africa's most outstanding attractions which draws thousands of visitors annually to its scenic beauty, crisp mountain air and clear waters. © Antbear Guest House

The Antbear Guesthouse, originally built in the 1940's and recently restored by sculptor Bruce Attwood, gets its name from the previous resident, who lived beneath the floor boards before restoration. Eccentrically refurbished using wood gathered in the surrounding valleys, the Antbear combines comfort with a unique environment.

Using a fifty-year-old outhouse for the basic framework, Bruce created a unique guesthouse and home in the rural hinterland of Kwazulu-Natal. The original structure which belonged to a farmer friend, consisted of two traditional rondavels, or thatch covered huts, connected by a stoep, or veranda with an overhead trellis. Perched on a kind of natural platform overlooking the bushman’s river, the house has panoramic views of the Drakensberg Mountains. Relax, enjoy the view, take walks around the farm and savor the delicious food prepared by Andrew and Conny. There is a lot to be seen and done in the area. Participate in the farm life, feed the calves or watch the milking. Drive up to Giants Castle, the Champagne valley or Mont Aux Sources. Walk in the Drakensberg on day trips or even stay in a cave overnight.

Honeymoon Couples: We have just the perfect place for a honeymoon. We are a small guesthouse and we let our guests feel welcome in quiet and private surroundings. We do have one really special room a touch more romantic than what most places call their honeymoon suites. It’s such that you can even have a candlelit bath sipping champagne with the bath right in the room. The room is eccentrically furnished with homemade bed and cupboards. We cook great food which is the finishing touch to a perfect honeymoon.

Overall, Antbear is a nice guest house to enjoy a peaceful time away. Although Andrew and Connie were away for the weekend, the staff were accommodating and quite hospitable. I did think that the guest house was a bit overpriced given that it lacks the facilities and location of other resorts in the 'Berg' but carries the same price tag.

As always we fell under the charm of The Antbear, of its beautiful views and stunning, handmade wooden furniture and fittings. Welcoming and informative staff and hosts. Delicious food, prepared with the freshest farm produce add to enjoyment. It is easier to reach/find than one wold think, and the perfect location to tour the central Drakensberg or the Midlands Meander.

Wow. We stayed at the Antbear Guesthouse for two wonderful nights. We could not have been made more welcome by the friendly hosts. This is the kind of guesthouse where you want to unpack your bags and never leave. Everything about our stay was first class. Our rooms were a delight and full of interesting handmade wooden furniture and fixings as well as extremely well equipped. The food, service and company were fabulous. The setting is ideal for exploring this part of South Africa and we were given plenty of advice and ideas for places to visit. We would have no hesitation in recommending this guesthouse to others.
