This great little area has a terrific community style shop and post office. The shop houses a coffee bar selling wonderful cakes and coffees. There are some nice easy and more difficult walks. Hoekwil is within easy reach of Wilderness but it’s far quieter and more peaceful. The night sky was beautiful!

If we "win the Lotto" we would definetly buy property in Hoekwil. It is peaceful and beautiful but you are also near Wildernis , George, Knysna etc. The location is perfect. We really would love to retire there some day.

The sleepy village of Hoekwil may look like just another countryside village to the average tourist or visitor. But once you have stayed a while, the true character of this delightful area entices all and keeps you wanting to stay just a little longer. Hoekwil has a very rural feel to it. The little village centre consists of a 4 way-stop with the following at its corners: the Hoekwil Primary School (with 134 barefoot children running around happily), the Vleie church, the post office and the Hoekwil village shop. The real makings of a little platteland village. The real gems of this area have to be the people. The living is slow, the key words are acceptance of diversity, and the general respect for nature by all who live here is evident in the way the locals go about doing their day-to-day chores and jobs. There are so many activities to do in the immediate surrounding area that it will quite literally keep you busy for days. Fun stuff. Some free and absolutely necessary for the soul. Others are exhilarating and gets you on an adrenaline high. Some activities:  Hiking There are several day hikes in the area. The most notable being the short trail close to the Big Woodville Tree and the Brown-hooded Kingfisher trail. The Kingfisher trail leads you up the valley along the Duiwe River to a waterfall with a rock pool for swimming. Plenty of forest birds can be seen along the way.  Fishing Saltwater and freshwater fishing.  Bird-watching The Malachite bird hide is nestled amongst the reeds along the Langvlei. The number of birds you will be able to view from this hide will excite any keen twitcher.  Canoeing Canoeing on the Touw river in the Ebb & Flow National Park is an absolute must for any tourist to the area. Nature lovers and bird watchers will thoroughly enjoy this outing. You can row up the river until it gets too rocky. Then you leave your canoe next to a well maintained hiking route to take a short walk to a waterfall area amongst the boulders a little higher up in the river.  Mountain-biking Hoekwil is mountainbike country. The number of route options will overwhelm any keen mountainbiker and is guaranteed not to disappoint. Many of the locals are keen mountainbikers themselves and will be able to provide you with countless routes. The Kingfisher MTB race is a local race presented by the Hoekwil Primary School. It is an established MTB race and rated as one of the best in the Western Cape. It is usually held during March/April every year. Watch out for the date of this adventurous and fun-filled event.  Water sports on Island Lake Island lake allows the water sports enthusiasts to enjoy the day out. Anything from canoeing, sailing, waterskiing, windsurfing, etc.  Visit our beautiful beaches: Some of the best beaches for swimming, surfing, kiteboarding, fishing are in this area: Wilderness beach, Sedgefield lagoon beach, Swartvlei beach, Myoli beach, Buffalo bay, Herolds bay, Victoria bay.  Visit a local Market:  Wild Oats Fresh Produce Market (Sedgefield – every Saturday morning)  George Farmers Market (every Saturday morning)  Under the Milkwood Friday Night Market ( Wilderness – Friday evenings)  Wild Woods: Wild Woods allows for a fun family outing. Family members can spend a few hours up in the forest with ziplines and platforms and obstacles built high up amongst the trees. Absolute fun for the more adventurous family. Safety comes first with the operators and there are special courses for the smaller kids.  Seven Passes Road: On the old 7-passes road to Knysna you can take a scenic trip and enjoy the splendor of South Africa’s passes  Other activities in the surrounding areas: Paragliding, 4x4 routes, canoeing& kayaking, yachting & sailing, waterskiing, scuba & snorkeling, whale watching, horse riding, golf, sky diving, ocean safari’s, etc.
