Déjà View - It’s a pretty name. Roughly translated, it means `A view already’, which was true of the charming enclave in which it was built in the ‘70s – situated on the lower slopes of the mountain, all 20 of the white-walled houses, with their green woodwork and grey-tiled roofs, have a view of the yacht and naval harbour.

Rates: The house comfortably sleeps four adults, and rates are pitched accordingly.(R800 per day in peak season for the house, R700 per day out of season). A discount is available for two persons only, and similarly there will be a R100 extra charge for any additional persons up to a maximum of six.

It’s close to the main road, 39 steps up in fact. So leave your car in the lock-up garage attached to the house and walk down to the pub and pizza place, restaurants – sushi, fish, fine and fashionable – and shops. Turn right on the main road and in 15 minutes you’re at Boulders, home of the African Penguin colony.

Turn left and 15 minutes off is Long Beach (long, but never crowded), next to Simon’s Town station. Hop aboard a train and take a 10-minute trip to Kalk Bay, a fishing harbour village with a string of shops on its main road. There’s fashion from Langa to Lima, décor, accessories, Afrikana, collectables, jewellery, antiques and memorabilia.

And the food offerings are as varied: Harbour House has water-splashed picture windows overlooking the waves, and plenty of fresh fish and seafood on its menu; the Olympia Café is a crowd-pleasing breakfast, brunch and lunch venue, with a bakery at back; the Brass Bell operates from a train parked off the station; Live Bait is Harbour House’s little sister down the stairs and Polana is another sibling, with Portuguese ancestry.

It’s on a cul-de-sac, so it’s quiet. In whale season (July to October), you’ll hear the giants breathing in the bay at night; all year round, you’ll turn over and go back to sleep as midshipmen whistle the various watches and duties of the early morning. Later, ships’ hooters announce the comings and goings of the frigates, tugs and subs you can see from your bedroom windows and deck, whilst gulls wheel and cry in the yacht basin just below you

There’s space for six in three rooms: a main bedroom with king-size bed, a second bedroom with two close-as-a-kiss single beds, and a lounge off the deck (with bar fridge for your pre-barbecue evening drinks) that has a double sleeper couch.

As important, there are two bathrooms, one en suite with a bath/shower and toilet, another separate bathroom with bath, shower and toilet, and a downstairs guest cloakroom with basin and toilet. So no need for queues in the morning!

The décor’s charming. Beach-house style, it features natural shades and blues, echoing the sea and sand of a Cape coastal town. The linen’s white cotton for coolth, with light-weight duvets for summer and plenty of blankets and throws for cold weather times.

The bath linen’s as fine as the bedding, with beach towels aplenty.

When you’re relaxing after a day out, there’s lots to relax with: games for the children, a TV with cable (DStv), a shaded, child-safe courtyard off the kitchen and dining room for when the local south-easter gets up speed, a braai for that special South African barbecue custom (don’t forget to buy fresh fish off the boats in Kalk Bay harbour), a hammock for siestas.

Dèjá View is serviced twice a week. If you need personal laundry or ironing done that’s no problem – ask the house help to do it after hours, for a small fee. Otherwise, there’s an excellent laundry in town.

No gym in Simon’s Town, but you’ll find personal trainers galore: left and right of the enclave there are steps going up and up and down again, for the best holiday workout! They hark back to a time when the houses on the hillslopes were linked by paths, not roads.

You’ll find Dèjá View well-equipped, with the obligatory stove, washing machine, tumble drier, dish washer, microwave and double-door fridge/freezer, as well as a bar fridge upstairs. And a fireplace for when the winter cold bites, with heaters in the bedrooms.

Pets are welcome.
Transfers from the airport can be arranged.

Excellent location with astonishing view
David Pimentel, Mozambique

Although we just stayed for one night felt like wanting to stay a lot more. The house can accommodate one family and has everything you can need. Excellent location, a few steps above the main road. From the bedroom window you can have an astonishing view over the bay. We had a warm and friendly welcome from our hosts Lynne and Dave

We have stayed at many, many, self catering establishments in the Western Cape but Deja View comes out tops. Quaint, central to False Bay and close enough to the City via picturesque routes whilst ideal for day drives to all Peninsula destinations; quiet, private, secure, exceptionally well equipped, home from home feel. Quality furnishings. Well done Dave and Lynne, we'll be back.
