Cape Cross Lodge sits right on the edge of the cold fertile Atlantic Ocean; a serene haven for visitors to this vast untamed, seldom-explored wilderness. The curious mix of Cape Dutch and West Coast fishing village architecture with colossal windows happily embraces the natural light and affords endless contemplative vistas.

The large patio, overlooking the beach and ocean, flows into the lower deck with its warm, welcoming reception area and intriguing curio shop housing an array of gifts. Leading from this charming space is the comforting cocktail bar and lounge, a quirky wine cellar and two cozy dining sectors. Around this tranquil oasis lodge lies infinite ocean and desert.

A large glass frontage, fire-burnt clay tiles, comfy chairs, the sheen of polished wood, the flickering warmth of fireplaces conspire to impart a classic simplicity to the lounge and dining areas. A fine a-la-carte menu is served to small groups, while a larger assembly is able to savor a sumptuous buffet. The cocktail bar and private wine cellar provides a selection of exemplary wines and spirits.

The lodge caters lunch for day visitors and is the perfect rest spot for those traveling the Skeleton Coast or Damaraland region. Special requests can be met; included are honeymoon packages, formal occasions, private beach dinners and picnic excursions into the surrounding desert or along the bay.

The Cape Cross Lodge can also facilitate small conference groups and private corporate functions. We enjoyed everything about our stay, the room, the view, the food and the waiters were exceptionally helpful and swift.

My daughters and I arrived at this lovely oasis by the sea. Though it was a bit chilly (having come from the hot north) the fires were burning and we enjoyed the afternoon tea. Dinner was wonderful and everyone made us feel at home. So close to the Seal Colony. I would love to come back in warmer weather.

The place and the food was nice but I think it is overpriced at N$1600 per night per couple. I've slept at lower priced places in South Africa which are much better than Cape Cross Lodge. The quality of their toilet paper leaves much to be desired for such an over priced place. The price must be reduced to N$800 per couple per night. Their staff is very friendly.

Messum Crater tour was unforgettable. Guide, the manager of the Lodge, was very knowledgeable about the crater and we saw sights that could never have been seen elsewhere such as the valley of the 5000 Welwitschia , ancient rock paintings which was discovered by him and the lowest point, a very pretty salt pan with a special rock rubbed smooth by generations of rhinos! As it was winter I am afraid the rooms tend to get too cold for comfort and some heating would help but there was none. Also the electricity was switched off after 9.30pm and though some lights were functioning from the batteries this was not the case in the bathroom. The Seals at Cape Cross was of course the prime reason for staying at the Lodge but by itself takes only at most half a day but this depends on whether only the males were ashore (which was the case when we were there) or if the females come ashore too which would be later.
